One month

Dominos 3

It has been exactly one month since I got my iTouch. One month since I started actual development on Dominos 3. Looking back, I've actually made a lot of progress.

A sign, a checkpoint flag, a domino and a spinny cross thingy. Oh, and a bush.

A load of dominos falling over, plus another spinny planky thingy.

Surfing on a domino on some spinny spinny thingies.

The images may look slightly torn, but it seems to only happen when I take screenshots, looks fine otherwise.

The graphics are by no means final. Suggestions are welcome, advice would be nice.

I've not managed to get as much work done as I'd like to have done, due to exams and coursework and life and stuff, but I'm definitely getting there. The main game engine is pretty much complete. Now I need to add in objects (such as those spinning cross shapes, rocks, and other stuff I think up). Need to make it more polished (scenery, effects, random cool stuff). Then I will need to develop levels, and of course a menu of some sorts, and at some point it would be cool to get some music in there as well.

I do not know exactly how long this project will take, but if I keep working at a steady pace, I reckon it should take no more than several more months and maybe a few more or less. Yes that is a vague estimate.

It all really depends on how much free time I get, which depends on what work I get set.

I wonder how much I will have got done one month from now. Oh yeah, I need to think of a better name for Dominos 3. I like the name "Dominos", however I think it would make potential buyers dismiss this game based on the presumption that it is a Domino game, when in fact it is a physics platformer.

Other news

In other news, I have watched several films recently:

-Avatar (in 3D wouldyoubelieveit!?)

-V for Vendetta

-Monty Python's The Meaning of Life

-Monty Python's Life of Brian

-The Hangover

-A Clockwork Orange

Any recommendations of good films that I should…obtain?

Well there's the matter of configuring the controls to work on the computer. The game, being designed for the iPhone, makes good use of the iPhone input (accelerometer and touchpad). Though I have some ideas as to how I would do the PC controls.

You'll make a fortune off of this, provided you allow it to be sold.

I forget what fraction the creator gets of the $0.99 it takes to download.

Something like that anyway. I don't own an iTouch/Phone/Donkey, so I'm going off of things I hear.

Nice.

I just watched (and loved) Little Miss Sunshine. Also, Being John Malkovich is one to check out.

Oh, films.

Uhh… Pan's Labyrinth, Sweeney Todd and Watchmen?

Grand-High Gamer 14 years, 10 months ago

Minus Watchmen which is pretencious, drawn out, shit.

have a sun coming over the hills, then you could also have some night levels with a moon, have both heavily stylised with a soft glow effect around the moon and stars.

I am glad you suggested the sun, as I had just added that a couple days ago! :D

You are making it for the iTouch? Good! Now I don't feel like I am competing with you while I make the new squares game.

Also, what physics engine are you using for this game? If it uses the source for GMphysics, do you mind sending it to me?

marbs 14 years, 10 months ago

Well, I plan on doing a PC version of it later on. Would it really be competing anyway, is your game that similar to mine?

And as for physics, I am using Unity, which has PhysX implemented into it (GMPhysics is just a wrapper for PhysX). As for the source of GMphysics, yes I do have it. However GMPhyiscs needs quite an old version of PhysX in order to work properly. I did manage to compile it myself in Dev-C++, however it made game maker crash when I ran it. I was hoping to be able to fix some bugs in it. Since now GMPhysics doesn't work above GM6, I have kinda given up on it.
