Cliches of First Person Shooters

Posted by mazimadu on Jan. 26, 2010, 6:51 p.m.

Hey what's up. I was reading a blog here on 64D (I for get what blog that was. I'm sure you will find it on the recent tab) and found that it directed me to a page with RPG cliches. The page didn't have a lot, but then I was redirected to another page with 192 RPG cliches ( http://project-apollo.net/text/rpg.html ).

Inspired by this, I would like you guys to take part in a little exercise.:

We are all going to write in the comments section of this post cliches commonly found in First person shooters.

NOTE

——-

Given the nature of the genre, add the following letters in the first line of every post.

[A] : Cliches common to ALL FPS's

: Cliches common to OLD SCHOOL FPS's

[C] : Cliches common to CURRENT GENERATION FPS's

You always have a melee weapon that is SO WEAK, it is almost never used during the course of the game.

Weapons can fire an endless number of rounds without any sort of jamming/stoppage.

[A]

The player can still shoot/use his arms while climbing a ladder, a process which, for normal people, requires all four limbs.

Not true mike, L4D doesn't let you do that. Which sucks since it won't finish reloading :<

@RawrSpoon

There is an above that post, refering to old skool shooters only

ALL projectile weapons fire ridiculous amounts of bullets without ever needing to reload.

[A] There are guns.

There are low-poly guns or just sprites as guns.

[C] The guns look damned realistic.

[A]You attack people

You attack monsters

[C]You attack people

Nazis.

[A]Zombies and Aliens.

[C]Zombie Alien Nazis.

[A]: OH SHIT SPACE-DEMONS FROM HELL, NEVER SEEN THAT ONE BEFORE (although this one may actually end up working out pretty well, as long as it's obvious there was no intent in its being original)

: Sort of like Comment #1, there'd be a melee move you'd use twice then stop completely once you get the chainsaw 5 seconds later, which does the exact same thing, but better.

[C]: Realism traded in for actual fun.

[A]: You'd get a pistol which you almost NEVR use (I think Armed and Dangerous sort of parodied this [unintentionally?])

[A(or maybe O?)]: Shotguns not only cannot fire all bullet types, but it's a shitting dickface for accuracy.

Response to first post:

Halo says otherwise. For some reason, getting shot repeatedly in the chest won't kill you, but getting ambushed by a melee weapon will.

You'd think that with bullet-resistant armor, you might have some similar resistance to melee weapons.

Course, I haven't played Halo enough. All I know is we had some kid who always melee'd as the Ninjanaut.

FPS - cliches: That they're first-person. And have guns. Now wouldn't it be interesting if they had a top-down FPS with bubble blowers. What a twist! It's so revolutionary that it calls for a whole new genre!
