Music Compo!

Posted by pounce4evur on Jan. 22, 2012, 9:08 p.m.

Sorry guys, there were more for a competition than there were for a collaboration, and it seems to be the easiest thing to do. I just thought I'd throw out some ground rules and see what you all think. Again, I don't think I'll be hosting this, so anyone serious about hosting/judging/participating in any way, SPEAK NOW OR FOREVER HOLD YOUR PEAS.

So, the rules would be:

1. You cannot use tracks from previous works. They may be used as inspiration, but it cannot be the same song. (Meaning don't change a note in each song and submit that for the contest)

2. As you enter yourself as a participant, make sure to let us know what your preferred genre will be. You can change this at any time until you are 2 weeks into the competition (This will be a 3-week long compo, because I know a new semester just started).

3. The song can be any file type, as long as judges can listen to it and you can prove that all of the songs are yours (or even that it is your remix on a song). It is going to be this way because you can't put mp3 files into this site's file manager.

(any better ideas on this one are welcome. if everyone has access to a certain site, then that will be where the songs will be submitted)

3. You can use any and all music that you make in this competition for your V4D entry as well. (Cyrus says so.)

The theme is: ADVENTURE!

for some reason I'd thought it was the 26th, not the 16th, fuckfuckfuckfuckfuckfuckfuckfuck

1:24edit: It's already late and at this point I couldn't really record it without waking the whole house up, so I'll probably have it up tomorrow at some point, which is still too late, but whatever.

Alert Games 12 years, 10 months ago

Just finish it up today. I dont see why the judges cant judge for today and tomorrow :P unless there is really a reason…. in which case hurry the fuck up.

Short reviews because I'm an arsehole. Do bear in mind that the competition was to make one song. Since this wasn't amazingly clear, if people have posted more then one track than I've taken the best one.

Acid's entry: Interesting chords, structure's a little boring, I love the choice of soundfonts apart from that snare. Much like Mega, you could have gone and found another world here but you missed your chance.

Steve's entry: I can't in good conscience judge this as one song. Come on, you haven't even attempted to get them to hang together as a single idea (see: JuurianChi). The best is probably No. 10 in terms of development, I think it's worth trying to hook these together and creating a whole.

Mordi's entry: You're not allowed to win.

Mega's entry: Weirdly falls apart at 0:12 and again at 0:47. I appreciate terse writing but there were so many places you could have taken this. A missed oppurtunity.

JuurianChi's entry: One of the most awkward tonal shifts I've heard. Opening from 3:06 with the drum beat was not the best option. (I tried listening to the longer cut instead but I think audio compression got the better of the track and it's rather unpleasant to listen to for me).

hel's entry: The times when you're not throwing a drum kit down the stairs were by far the most pleasant. You've gotta groove, daddyo. Also, see below ->

Alert Game's entry: Melodies that have little space in them are going to struggle to be remembered.

lasper's entry: Very much a piece with melody and counter-point with little inbetween. Talk to Steve about getting a DAW/VST by the way, most people have decent connections nowadays and don't mind downloading a 5mb file if it means they can avoid midi.

Oh fuck, I think Mordi wins. Dammit, Mordi, quit it.

If we're counting, Acid comes in second and Steve is third (mainly because I get the "Adventure" vibe off Acid's music).

Alert Games 12 years, 10 months ago

Im gonna listen to the other entries now. Perhaps I could make a short game with all the music? D: D:

@sir xemic: :3

@juju: thanks for the review.

Im not necessarily a judge but ill put in my 2 cents:

>Acid: Melody is pretty good, but the song as a whole wasnt too interesting.

>Steve: I agree with juju, you should make it one song :P Altogether i felt that the songs seperate wouldnt be as interesting as one song.

>Mordi: So goood.

>Mega: I like it. But i feel that its a good start and can be improved to be more memerable ;)

>Juurianchi: I actually like parts of it, but the transitions i think were weird. Also it sounds like its lower quality even though it isnt in bitrate (i think). With better mastering and better transitions, I think this would be an awesomesong :o ( i like the first parts)

>Hel: Its pretty cool but like juju said the percussion wasnt as great. i think the one part with the cymbal crashes wasnt necessary ;)

>Alert Games: 10/10

>Iasper: not bad for a mid, but if only mid's had more built into them to sound better. :/

Overall i would say mordi first(of course), mega, then hel's. I think steve and juurian's sound good, but are not as fitting to the comp (IMO), but then again, the comp is very general lol. Acid's was good but it didnt feel as adventurous to me :o Nice songs everyone!

Mordi's track is awesome.

It'd be a shame if my song won't win simply because it's a midi though.
