[108] 108-DOS v0.1.0000

Posted by takua108 on Oct. 10, 2006, 1:09 a.m.

There's been one project that I've secretly wanted to do ever since I heard about advanced web programming stuff such as Flash, DHTML, and Ajax.

Today, I finally made that project a reality.

<b>Behold, <a href="http://thetyphooncorp.com/console" target="_blank">108-DOS</a>!</b>

What is it, you ask?

Basically, it's attempting to be a DOS/UNIX command line interface-type thing embedded in a web browser using Ajax, PHP, and a little bit of (non-Ajax) JavaScript. I started this project when I saw <a href="http://www.w3clubs.com/sp/ajax/webconsole.html" target="_blank">WebConsole</a>, a nifty little Ajax example thing. I then proceded to rip the Ajax part of WebConsole and make my own console, 108-DOS. Eventually I came to redo the interface entirely, so now the code is 100% mine.

The keyboard controls are:

ENTER enter a command (duuuur!)

UP previously entered command

DOWN more recently entered command

PGUP scroll up

PGDN scroll down

F5 "reboot" 108-DOS

Some suggested commands are:

HELP

WHATSNEW

HELP REGISTER

Note that it only works in FireFox, to my knowledge…if you open it in Internet Explorer, you get a surprise [^^]

Right now there's not much to do in it; basically you register your account, log into it, and try a bunch of commands. I'll add cooler stuff like file-uploading, file-editing, and maybe even some kind of basic programming language later on.

In other news, I'm sorry for being absent from 64D for so long; I had to study for various subjects in school (I ended up getting straight A's at the midterm, which is an improvement over my 2.8 GPA last year [>>]), and I had an Internet and cable outage in my area due to construction. That accounts for the last three days, but as for the rest of the time…well, I've been lazy, and I've been working on the new GameCave site with Arcalyth.

But mostly I've just been lazy. Sorry about that, I'll try to be more active now.

Although like three of you will even notice [>>]

<b>[EDIT.01]</b> I forgot to mention that there's easter eggs in 108-DOS! For those of you who know UNIX, try some "hacking" commands and see what comes up! …Yeah, it's pretty weak. But it gives you something to do.

Left and delete don't work

Works only in FF (not in Opera either) :(

Other than that, looks nice!

Firebird 18 years, 1 month ago

Nice console. Hali showed me first.

OL 18 years, 1 month ago

This is very cool. But slightly useless.

Eternal 18 years, 1 month ago

Haha, I tried it in IE, after I did in FF.

Also, what's the point of this, really? Everyone has a command prompt on their computer…

@Onyx: Thank you for testing in Opera…I forgot to ask someone to do that. It doesn't work, huh? That sucks, mostly because it implies that I probably coded something incorrectly. And the left and right keys don't work because I never intended them to, and without them, delete is mostly pointless. Thanks for trying it though!

@Firebird: Yeah, I forgot to send you the link when it was still in alpha…oops.

@OpticalLiam: No, it's <i>mostly</i> useless [^^] Like I said, I'm trying to find a way to clear the current screen better, as well as adding support for turning the visible console off. Why? Because I'd like to develop "applications" for 108-DOS. Because you're right, it really has little point other than to look cool right now. Thanks for the reply though!

@Eternal: I was hoping someone would open 108-DOS in IE just to see it BSOD (or, in this case, GSOD). And yeah, everyone should have a command prompt on your computer, but I'm doing this with the hopes of eventually making applications, games, and maybe even a command-line BBS just for the fun of it. I'm even thinking of making a sort of hacking game-type thing where you can "hack" your way up user levels (more rights, etc.). Plus, you'll be able to upload files and such in the future. Which reminds me:

<b>@EVERYONE:</b> Nobody registered an account who didn't already have one (myself, Halibutski, Arcalyth, and my friend armouredturtle)! C'mon, just sign up already! Type HELP REGISTER if you don't know how!

Thanks for the replies, they've been all positive (except for the fact that everyone noticed that this is fairly pointless), so…yeah.

Ehehe.

Nice GSOD XD

Make sure you make 108-bash instead of 108-DOS, because DOS sucks and bash is like a million times better. It would be unfair to say that you're not sending any personal information, because your IP address, date of problem, referred URL, phone number, e-mail address, eBay™ username and password, VISA™, MasterCard™, Discover™, and American Express™ information, social security number, home address, GPS location (accurate to four feet), birth certificate information, eating habits, nationality, retina and thumbprint information, criminal history, and several other, undisclosed personal tidbits are being transferred to us when you press enter while using DOS.

So yeah.

Lol Arc way to plagiarize my 404 page content [^^]

Damn straight! [:P]

Oh and btw: "DOS" is an acronym for "Disk Operating System," and "MS-DOS" means "Micro$oft Disk Operating System." There <em>were</em> other DOSes than MS-DOS, y'know.

So 108-DOS means "Disk Operating System of Awesomeness and Pwnery."
