I made two animations. :COOLGLASSES:

I watched Raise the Red Lantern. It's an astonishing film. It's the story of a new concubine introduced to the aging household of an aging aristocrat. The place is layered in a number of archaic family rituals and customs. The quiet drama it carries is simple, but I thought it was done very well. There's a lot of well-done omission and minimalism, not just in the story but in music and other aspects as well, that works in its favor beside the insidious guile that runs rampantly and quietly under the master's nose. But the color is the best thing.

Supple in its color, the film lavishes us with these penetrating reds of both the lanterns and the characters. They're set against the backdrop of this giant, archaic and desolate structure of a mansion, overbearing in their earthy grays and brown. And it's actually interesting that these set-ups carry the story and its themes. The brown brick walls almost seem overbearing to the faint glimpses of color we see on the characters' clothing, always weighing down on them like the customs of the patriarch.

I haven't actually watched any of those except Curse of the Golden Flower. It was pretty, but I didn't really like it much from what I remember. But it was also years ago.

I highly recommend Hero, it's one of my favourite movies.

Alright, I just watched Raise The Red Lantern. Wow. The movie is amazing, likely my new favourite.

I can't think of anything wrong with the movie apart from minor things such as pacing (which isn't all that bad seeing as how suspenseful it all is), the motives behind Songlian's being such a bitch (I understand that it may have been because of forced marriage, but she was extra bitchy to Yan'er), and somewhat predictable twists (expected). Apart from those possibly false scrutinies, I would have to say that this movie is almost perfect (or the most perfect I've yet seen). The cinematography is of course excellent, the acting is believable and subtle, story is well written, music etc.

I also enjoyed the persistent symbolism and twists, such as the seasons representing the mood (and how the season of spring (re-birth/life) was skipped). I was in disbelief when the master told Songlian that he burned her flute, oh man.

It was interesting to see how the mistresses were reduced to such a simple life, that they took pleasure and obsessed over such trivial things as foot massages and lanterns.

Also, Thernz, who's the girl in your background?

Well, at the very least, Yan'er was bitchy to her first! It's a cycle of hate. In any case, she was in university, then her father dies, and she suddenly loses any chance at success in life. So it makes sense that she'd be pissy! Anything associated to her past life is pretty much moot and the future seems to be defined by this new marriage.

I do agree about the plot. It's pretty standard but I thought it was presented very well and that made up for it. I was really intrigued by how the mistresses acted too. Instead of, say, lashing out at the customs and traditions that confined, they embraced and tried to exploit them. It seems like the destruction dealt wasn't so much from their confinement but what they did about it.

The girl in my background is a Chinese singer named alan.

Really? I never really felt that Yan'er was that vicious at first. I actually pitied her somewhat, being driven by the older woman like that, she seemed sad, and then Songlian saw that she seemed weak, so she exploited that. I just found that she was most cruel to Yan'er out of most the other girls, even more so than Meishan, more immediately at least.

I quite like how Meishan turned out to be much nicer than made out to be, and wanted to help Songlian to fight against a 'common evil' ; Zhuoyun. I would have liked to see the first mistress, Yuru play a bit of a larger role.

Also, did you think that the Fifth mistress presented at the end of the movie looked similar to Yan'er?

oh i mean yan'er still didn't deserve it. I wasn't really justifying it lol.

I think Yuru was just supposed to represent what would happen to all the mistresses, realizing the futility of everything and just chillin' in her own helplessness. She obviously didn't like any of them, but I guess she thought it probably wasn't worth the effort to do anything. Probably just stopped caring. I personally like that she was made that way.

I don't think the Fifth mistress looked like Yan'er at all.

Pretty awesome animations. I stopped taking my time with that stuff a while ago…for some reason I just can't handle it anymore.

Alan FTW!

Yeah, I kinda of see how Yuru was like that now.

I guess I'm just strange for thinking she looked like her :| .
