I made two animations. :COOLGLASSES:

I watched Raise the Red Lantern. It's an astonishing film. It's the story of a new concubine introduced to the aging household of an aging aristocrat. The place is layered in a number of archaic family rituals and customs. The quiet drama it carries is simple, but I thought it was done very well. There's a lot of well-done omission and minimalism, not just in the story but in music and other aspects as well, that works in its favor beside the insidious guile that runs rampantly and quietly under the master's nose. But the color is the best thing.

Supple in its color, the film lavishes us with these penetrating reds of both the lanterns and the characters. They're set against the backdrop of this giant, archaic and desolate structure of a mansion, overbearing in their earthy grays and brown. And it's actually interesting that these set-ups carry the story and its themes. The brown brick walls almost seem overbearing to the faint glimpses of color we see on the characters' clothing, always weighing down on them like the customs of the patriarch.

Great!

(Do you use any references for your animations?)

I was just wondering if you know a good site for refs … sometimes it's a bit a hard to imagine certain movements without a ref.

Mm, I can't really recommend any besides for fighting moves. Most of the time, I just go to Fighter's Generation and glaze through the gifs in the character pages for inspiration. Otherwise, I just searched "ukemi roll" in Google for the first image.

Those are neato animations :D

Man, glad to hear Raise The Red Lantern is Good, Zhang Yimou is such an awesome director, and good movies can be expected of him :D . I recently got (by got, I mean downloaded :3) his entire filmography, and have been watching through each one. Can't wait to see this one.

What films have you watched? I haven't really gotten around to watching a lot of Yimou's films.

Praying Mantis 13 years, 5 months ago

Hero, House of Flying Daggers and am starting to watch curse of the golden flower.

I haven't watched a whole lot of his films, actually, but so far they're pretty good.

I always make sure to watch with the movies in Chinese (plus subtitles), I hate the English dubs.

Ugh, Hero probably had the worst dub. It turned a serious arty movie into something you'd expect from Disney :|
