SmallGame *Story* talk

Posted by Alert Games on June 6, 2011, 11:06 p.m.

Here are some ideas that people generally liked that we should decide on, so we can work on story and gameplay ideas. :)

Type: RPG / Platformer

Setting: Roman-ish time period, but with different environments and possible different dimension as a twist.

Not too heavy on magic, but can still have some.

(Heres a previous idea)

Quote: Cyrus and Mush

Time: First Century A.D.

Place: Roman Empire (Pompeii/ Herculaneum)

Style: The story should feel adventurous and epic yet lighthearted (meta-fictional and self-referential); i.e. unpretentious.

[One idea is to have the protagonist try to prevent the volcanic eruption by fighting the Roman gods (or saving them from evil).

It will not take place in Rome. It will be a made up lands and have different enviroments, which could resemble both egytian and roman lands. The volcano will be an optional event, and not the focus of the story.

We also were starting to decide NOT to reference 64digits very much or at all. I thought the canadonian's avatar was a cool idea though…. lol

Anyway, please contribute your ideas, or critique the above ideas! Post your opinions!

Now we can talk about story ideas around this setting.

I don't mind some fantasy (and/or mythology).

also, i dont mean fantasy as in dungeons and dragons, fairies, orcs etc, i just mean we need to come up with our OWN universe rather than just using the real world

Okay then its settled. An olderstyle fantasy world. Id say similar to a Zelda kind of approach, as it is older style not referencing the real world also.

I will update the blog post and we can talk about more story details that we'd like.

Zelda does reference the real world (if you look back to the original zelda, it was a medieval setting). Every fantasy game makes reference to the real world. You just have to learn about a particular period and culture to create something engaging and unique.

Personally, I am tired of seeing "fantasy" settings that draw from the same old norse, greek, oriental, Tolken, Lewis and medieval settings we have seen to death (Steampunk I like, but thats because it is the new cyberpunk). If people took the time to learn of other cultures and their mythology, the current state of fantasy wouldn't seem so cliche.

I think it should reference the real world.

<_< you guys know what I mean. Referencing the culture but not particular events or names.

@mazimadu: Thats why Im saying to limit the magic, and suggested limiting gods before. But I think that most people would like to work with this kind of timeframe. I mean, personally I like either steampunk, or futuristic, or modern, so Im just going with what most people want.

Little details dont need to be argued about because everyone will have their own opinions of a game that they would like. But this is a collaboration, so it should be general and friendly to people who like and dont like the genre.

Lets make a game that is fun to play, even if you dont prefer the time period. We want different environments, different ideas, and a nice interesting story. Good graphics and music are helpful, but it wont be bad if it clashes a little bit in style since it is a WIP until we feel it is finished :)

I think I should work on improvement of the patformer example JID gave me.

More motivation to work on it that way.
