Blog.new

It's been nearly a month and a half since I last blogged about anything.

I must be getting lazy… or lazier than usual.

Anyway, have a blog.

Music

Let's get this started with a new chiptune I wrote:

https://soundcloud.com/mega1992/spire

I recently rediscovered the tremelo effect. Very useful for creating 'pad'-like background leads.

Programming

Surprisingly, I've been doing very little programming recently. This is due to the MOOC I'm taking part in via edX.

CS169.1X, Berkeley's "Software as a Service" course.

So far, I've been learning about Ruby, Rails, and a plethora of tools for web development.

I've also been deploying my homework to Heroku, so it's an interesting experience.

Speaking of Ruby… lovely language. It's taken top-spot in the interpreted languages list for me :P

Rails… is new. Using the MVC design is something I'm not used to at all, but it's actually really logical once you toy around with it somewhat.

Also been playing around with Behavior/Test Driven Development, actually using GitHub, and working on a home server page built on Rails.

So far, my marks for the homework have been excellent (100%, 95%, 100%), and the course has been challenging. It's nice to come away from something feeling like you've actually learnt a new skill.

Game Development

Yeah… got little to nothing here, or thereabouts.

Been turning Exile into something not Exile, because I'm sick of Exile.

Oh, and I found this in my Dropbox folder to help demotivate me even further than usual:

Of course, the running/jumping/climbing animations are gone.

Footnote

I've been playing fewer games than usual, due to my newly busy-ish work schedule.

Which is great, since I have so many damned games to play. My Steam library is getting ridiculously large for the little money I've spent on it (And is about to grow some more. See: Humble Bundle), my physical game collection is still looming in the closet, on the shelves and… well, everywhere, and let's not even talk about the rest.

My current in-progress games are Persona 4, Dragon Quest IX and until recently DotA 2.

I'm already sick of DotA 2. It's too competitive for my tastes, when I just want a non-competitive non-serious game to play, where I don't have to pander to the sub-culture that has sprung up around the game in order to enjoy it.

Case in point: I'll damned well use Abaddon's shield on myself if I damned well want to, and I'll farm if I damned well want to, and yes, I will solo and kill an enemy hero if I want to; the only time I want people telling me what to do is in a gank/push.

Oh look, I ranted. Oh well. I'm off to go play some more Persona. And watch the anime adaptation for the heck of it. And maybe get around to tackling the next set of lectures…

Scary, spire finished just as I finished reading. That rat looks so cute X3

Also, didn't you take screen shots of hunter? With like a million rats in each one? You could recover animations if you really need to :S

Astryl 11 years, 3 months ago

Potentially, though the rats are only a very small part of the problem. The character animations were pretty much refined and complete by the time I lost them.

On that note, I managed to recover the ship sprites from that shmup I was working on, by ripping from the screenshots.

Mega, take a lesson from DSG. If you lose progress, bring it back bigger and better than ever. We all have to do this sometimes, and all you have to do is look back and think "I lost work? At least I know how to do it again" or "Here's how I can do this more efficiently".

And yes, I no longer like DotA 2 for the same reason you posted. It's a lot less fun to play because of how serious people get. Combine that with the intense level of micromanagement you need and the so-called game loses a lot of its fun and becomes work.

Also, play P3 before you watch the anime that's coming out this fall. I'm quite excited. And I still need to play P4 (though I've heard mixed feelings about the anime).

The P4 anime doesn't really do much if you're looking for something in the glass vein of adding to the game's story.

It's decent though. It still has Chie Satonaka, and I liked the voice acting. I have yet to hear the english version.

It's basically what Kingdom Hearts fans keep asking for, and are never going to get.

An anime of the thing they like. Though if they did make an anime based on Kingdom Hearts, they should use the scripts from the Graphic Novel. It's way better than the game by itself.

I still have yet to try any Persona games. Couldn't get into Dota 2 myself either. it's rare to see you rant lol xD

i agree with Kilin, you'll be able to do the work again, and probably better this time around. I also know the feeling of being sick of your own game lol, that's when you randomly get the feeling that nothing is right and you gotta tear it all down and rebuild things. i do that from time to time but i try not to, other wise, i'd never get anything done. (which i rarely do… lol)

nice tune. wicked rat. what is the rat for anyway?

Wait am I missing something? What happened?

@Kilin: I'm working on a few things, though I'll only be able to really focus on them after I've completed the course I'm doing and found a bit of work. One of those things is basically Hunter, though I haven't got anything concrete for it yet.

@death: The rat was for this:

Music kicks ass. As usual. The lead in particular. The way it squeaks and squiggles. Good stuff!
