I take a week off...

_begin:

So I quietly disappear for a week, come back and:

> reidd has been unbanned

> somebody starts a Consoles vs PCs topic

> LAR's city is burning

> somebody else starts a stereotype 'want team, will pay bugger-all' blog.

And most shockingly:

> 64digits weekly gaming night has become the 64digits weekly knit-in try get stuff done night.

Anyway, I 'left' for a short while to get the internet in general out of my system.

I can't get anything done, nor can I relax, while I'm silently fuming over stupid comments I accidentally read on news sites/Youtube pages.

Turns out that turning the connection off for a bit actually does aid the creative process. I finally managed to start work on a new piece of music:

Also decided to screw game development for an indefinite amount of time; I have many ideas, but working with these ideas is not within my grasp at the moment; nothing new there.

I have got a few small prototypes I made during my week off that I'm not sharing until they're playable (In this case, 'prototype' meaning a mockup thingy, really).

One of them is a Columns clone. Because Columns. Got a few extra mechanics to add.

No, Cyrus. Nothing for F4D. Sorry :(

On another note, I've been spending the week playing several NES games, noting some of the interesting effects I never seemed to notice before (Ninja Gaiden 3 has multiple layers of parallax scrolling, and Megaman 5 has a scrolling background that is mixed with a static background and level pieces.)

So yeah… time to go actually read these new blogs and perhaps comment.

Don't do it, Mega! … Oops, too late.

I'm sad that you're taking a hiatus from game development stuff though. I always enjoy reading about your endeavours.

@SpectreNectar: Thanks. :P

It's too late for me! Go on without me!

Should've expected that chiptune to sound megamanish. Very nice.

What happened to the other f4d, where you were an eskimo/igloo-man/inuit/whatever?

I don't think a week counts as leaving the site dude. I've failed to attend university for longer than that

Astryl 10 years, 8 months ago

I was intending to stay away longer, but I couldn't resist the pull of making a jab at the 'game' everybody voted for this week. :P

Guess I'm back, but I'll probably lurk.

@Pirate-rob: Just got really tired of working on games. It's relatively easy to throw one together, but it doesn't help if I'm not happy with what I end up making.

I didn't intend for it to take over the game night, and I haven't voted for it at all so the fact that it's winning kind of irks me. Still, I think it's good for those in F4D to get together and finish something, but it really alienates those not in F4D (or those who just don't make games) so I didn't want to push it very hard.

Yeah, but in typical 64digits fashion, the least likely/out of place option becomes the most chosen option :P

Personally, I think I'm just having a nice quiet Fallout/Minecraft night.

Agreed, game night should go ahead and whoever wants to play the game, can- anyone who wants to program socially can too.

May's well show a screenshot of that Column's game I'm making:

Utilizing a few common mechanics from several Column's clones, including the ability to turn a stack of gems sideways, and a few things from some of those old games on the Genesis like Mean Bean Machine (And Puyo Puyo, I think).

It's difficult to show in the screenshot, but the rendering of the gems is actually quite complex. They use a simple sprite, with a simple animation for when hard light glints off them (That plays at random times), but it also renders each gem in multiple layers with additive blending and a few other tweaks to color and transparency to create a pulsating effect; makes it feel like the gems are pulsing with energy.

EDIT: This new automatic screenshot system that Dropbox just tried to get me to use doesn't seem to like allowing me to embed images :<
