A New Character Sketch

Kilin posts two blogs in a month? Unthinkable!

Hey, I think we've seen her before! In pixel form, that is.

The hands and fingers turned out well! Finally I have accomplished something that looks less blocky and more feminine.

Actually, I'm a little iffy on the shading. Sure, it looks nice, but I may end up going back to my two/three-toned shades instead of using the paintbrush for (nice-looking) multiple shades. Not that either is particularly hard, it's just that I'm debating which looks better right now, and I don't even have the other to show, because that'd take me another hour or so of Photoshop, and I'm a bit tired.

So yeah, the new thing I tried this time was not trying anything new.

For those who are wondering, this character is Saira Devereux from Prism Soul, the so-called "face" of the game, much like Reimu might be one of the faces of Touhou, even though there are three other playable characters. Aaaanyway, she's, as you may have guessed by the designs on her tabard, a priestess. In training, at least. And no, she's no goody-goody. All of the playable characters are exorcists (but not necessarily holy).

While I'm introducing her, let's quickly go over her abilities.

Shot Type 1

She has lasers that are useful for piercing enemies and shields. Who can say Marisa Kirisame?

Special: She consecrates the area at her position for ten seconds. Some bullets can't pass through this field.

Tips: With, essentially, two shields and a widerange bomb, she's one of the more defensive character types.

Shot Type 2

She has a peculiar pattern that starts out narrow and spreads at the top of the screen. Always. If you're in the middle, the bottom, even the top, it'll always spread. It's good for the "hit anywhere" deal, but if the boss moves too low, it can prove useless. Her highest damage point is where the spray starts.

Special: She creates a burst of holy energy at the top of the screen to damage all enemies it passes through.

Tips: With some proper positioning, and provided the boss is attracted to the top, it's a fairly useful shot type, and a double-edged sword. But her special makes up for her weakness, because not many others do reliable damage like hers.

Now with one portrait out of the way, that's one step closer I am to releasing a demo video! Finally this damn game gets some attention, because it's going to lose it as soon as AG finishes his API.

Ah.

Also, they need to look a bit more memorable. I mean, the sketch looks good and all, and works as a character, but in the end who's gonna be like "this mage-looking person with a cloak and staff really stads out against the other people with cloaks and staffs." I mean, crazy shit, man. At least one half-lizard half-snail character or something. Something that pops. Something that's like "holy crap that guy is cool, I wanna play as HIM!" Not like "oh, I guess this one's got good stats. Ya, the blue one." One of many hard lessons learned from trying to make a leginimate following to Lobster Fight amongst my friends.

I totally fucking forgot she had a shouldercoat.

And I agree with you. Problem is, my ideas for character designs are very limited. And most of that is because my art resources are limited. Besides that, most of my other characters have unique outfits, and I mostly say simplicity is best anyway, because who walks around with strange metal spikes poking out of their heads?

A good comment regardless, and I'll take that into consideration from now on. However, the reason I do the sketches for the most part, is so my limited abilities don't stagnate further, and to put in the games themselves. At this point though, feedback is nice.

Hey man, not saying you need to go the usual Japan route and give everyone retarded hair and weird spiky things and whatnot. I get the limits; small sprites and all that. However, what would work (and it would be rather interesting) would be if you maybe involved a few (but not too many) other mythic/alien/original species besides humans. They're relatively easy to sprite; usually just a change in body shape, size, and color, and depending on how humanoid you make it, just as simple to express different characteristics from. Again, just a suggestion, just some feedback, I don't even know what the rest of your roster currently looks like besides just her.

Just don't make solely cat-people or Wookiee-ripoffs and Gray-ripoffs like everyone else. That's just redundant.

Hence the "solely." Still no Wookiees or Grays though. Those are just dumb.

My other limits are that digital art for me takes several hours for one piece, where Cyrus can do probably ten of higher quality in that time. I just don't have the equipment, and my sketching skill also isn't quite up to par.

Yeah. That's the majority of my characters right there (I'm particularly into supernatural and abnormal stuff anyway). Humanoids, anyway. I still want people to be able to relate to them somehow.

Far as the roster goes, I don't plan on showing off everything I've got. At most, the main characters, because I get a chance to explain their mechanics a bit.

get the fuck in cyrus.
and what was the point in editing this cyrus?

Nice however if looks a bit slanted to the right. sometimes that happens to me while sketching so I deform it so it doesn't slant anymore. c:

also practice helps however studying other drawings and real life photos of people are helpful too c:<
