Let's Play More Games

Posted by Castypher on Feb. 22, 2012, 5:14 p.m.

Some of you may hate me for saying this, but I had so much fun when we were all actively playing on the Minecraft server with at least ten people on at all times. In fact, I went back a few months ago and there was nobody on. I felt like I was looking back at my childhood; that was the nostalgia I was getting.

And recently I've been addicted to Terraria, but playing solo is just not as much fun.

There are lots of multiplayer games out there, especially on Steam. If we can find something cheap to play, or even have a Minecraft/Terraria/TF2/LoL night, I think that'd be fun. I miss playing with some of you guys, and for a little reverse psychology, all we do is sit here and scratch our asses anyway, right? Why not scratch our asses on a video game?

Content? Okay. Lixim is once again facing potential problems, but I've been doing a lot of conceptualizing. Here's one question I'd like to throw at you all, though, and I'll bold it for good measure.

What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of mixing an action platformer with a life simulation?

I'm pretty good at making genre hybrids and having them work, but this is a complicated game, and thus needs some more input before I jump in.

Mostly (yes, a lot of this has come from Terraria), the action platformer bit is optional, and refers to bosses that you have to defeat in order to unlock areas. Additionally, the player can change the difficulty once per game day, which affects the death penalty, mostly. Unlike some games though, not just the difficulty is adjusted. The player gains many perks for living on the edge, too, like access to new machines, increased capability, etc.

The life sim isn't in regards to the player. This isn't a survival game, though I do want it to be dark with an imminent death looming overhead on the hardest difficulty. The life simulation is the ability to raise Lixies, the endangered race of the world, protecting them and using them as allies. They'll fight for you, for the most part, but require your help to survive, for the most part.

If any of you are familiar with the Creatures franchise, particularly the original trilogy, you'll know what I'm talking about.

Let me know what you think, please. I would really appreciate the input.

As for my V4D prize of a random Steam game, I do remember. Send me your Steam ID or Steam-associated e-mail (or just add kilin08 as a friend), and I'll get to you as soon as I see a good game.

Also, Creatures 4 is coming out soon!

Though I think the opposite idea would also be interesting - playing as a lonely space traveller on an alien planet where life all around you evolves. And is out to kill you. And you can mess up the ecosystem - like drive a predatory species to extinction for your own protection - but with a risk of e.g. running out of food or facing other ecological disasters. Just thinking out loud…
Can I steal that idea? :D

And Ace of Spades would be nice too, seeing it's free and thus everyone can participate.

I recommend Ace of Spades and APB reloaded

Ace of Spades is… interesting. It makes you feel like a real WWI soldier… you know… digging out trenches in the rain… playing the waiting game with your enemies… finding backroutes into enemy bases… seeing a bunch of fellow soldiers build giant pink cocks when an invincible trooper flies in spawning infinite grenades…

^this

Playing Ace of Spades, APB, or Soldat would work for me.

(although I've only played the first of those games and so would have no idea what I'm doing in the last two)

I'd play Ace of Spades.

Never played it before, but I saw a few youtube vids for it, looks decent.

EDIT: Playing the game right now, it's actually really fun.

From surviving the first day to beating skeletron prime.
That wouldn't be bad at all. But I've always wondered what it's like for people on the overworld when someone summons the Wall of Flesh, given that its height is "the entire height of the map".

That is definitely something I'd like to see, and if Iasper never gets on it, I sure as hell would.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?
The router? I did, but it was mostly during the port forwarding process when I forwarded port 7777 and it never appeared on the list. I've also tried running it on port 25565, since I know that hosting Minecraft worked for me, but sadly, I had no luck there, either.

I've never played Ace of Spades, but it looks alright. Not sure what APB is, but I see Realm of the Mad God came to Steam recently, and I played that back when it was a browser game. Though it held my attention for a little while, I wouldn't reeeeally recommend it.

Also, random thought of the day. I had a dream we all got together and shot FSX with a cannon. Fuck, that was fun. And oh no, I've finally had a 64Digits dream.

It would be my first and last.

Hahaha, congratulations on your first 64D dream!

Now wtf, and you claim I'm out to get YOU?! Psh.

Ace of spades looks interesting…

@Cyrus

What do you mean it didn't work? D:

You should try the Ace of Spades Play page with IE.

FF doesn't let me connect to servers.

I am really starting to enjoy ace of spades, I got some nice kill streaks yesterday, and got up to 101 points (2 captures, 81 kills)
