Nanowrimo July 2013

Posted by Castypher on June 27, 2013, 3:59 p.m.

So for all you writers out there, you might be familiar with National Novel Writing Month, or Nanowrimo for short. If you're not, it's an opportunity to write a novel in a single month with thousands of other people who are going for the same goal.

While it's usually set in November, they do like to do one or two during the summer as well. The site is here:

http://campnanowrimo.org/

Camp Nanowrimo has one big difference from the main event, and that's the matchmaking portion, where you're assigned into "cabins" of people who are writing similar stories.

I remember we had a few people participating last November, including myself and marbs, and since it's summer and a lot of stuff has died down, I'd like to see who's interested in participating this next month, and see if we can have a place to share ideas and frustrations with each other, and maybe even have some critique sessions.

OR BETTER YET, TEAMSPEAK READINGS.

Today is the 27th, and the event spans all of July, so there's not a whole lot of time left to come up with an idea. The goal is to meet 50,000 words, which is 1,667 words a day. It's a difficult challenge that not everyone can make, but it does feel good when you come out having finished something.

And that's only the beginning!

Post here with your Nanowrimo IDs too, so we can buddy up.

Better. Juurian's not in, though – I imagine he hasn't set his settings correctly. If we can all co-ordinate within the next 24 hours we may be able to get him in, but that's an if. Needless to say, don't anyone opt out until we have consensus.

Okay, so I have ZERO idea on how to game this cabin thing (I just checked my Cabin and I'm in a room with a bunch of Horny Sexual Vamipre Romance Novel pussies), so I'm just going to do all of my NanoWriMo whatevers here.

On 64Digits.

Your Community site.

Where everyone is already around.

And the facilities for NanoWriMo conversation already exist.

Only a few hours until it starts (for me, at least) and already the site is 503ing to reflect that. =P Crack your knuckles and open your favourite word processing software.

sudo apt-get install focuswriter for a distractionless fullscreen editing program with a few nifty bells and whistles. Get WriteMonkey for a fullscreen editing program with a tonne of nifty bells and whistles (type writer sounds, Markdown export, plugin support in the latest version, etc etc). Or just open up Word or Writer and set it to your favourite font.

For my goal of 25k words, I need to write 806 words a day.

First day's mandatory writing completed. 822 words so far. I'll probably do some more later and give myself a bit of breathing space.

Forgot about the start of this… I'm screwed…

EDIT: That WriteMonkey program is nice. I got 485 words done on a story… and then motherfucking Eskom happened. Google it. I'm raging for a few minutes and starting over. Using autosave this time, set to 30 second intervals…

^Man that sucks. I have this Ctrl+S reflex because of that kind of thing.

I was in the zone at the time.

Took precautions this time though. Set the autosave to 10 seconds. I am not going to lose this again.

Anyway, started over. Got 782 words so far, out of a self imposed 2000 word target.

Also, I'm loving WriteMonkey. It's making me want to write, which is rare.

So now I'm completely ignoring NanoWrimo's website because it keeps failing and such.

And then last night, I got tired of trying to write my super serious Psychological Romantic Sci-Fi Comedy with a painfully obvious ending.

And then bad things happened.

[quote=JuurianChi's Story]"Nina grinned as she looked at Celine's pants, they were looking pretty beat up, particularly in the area around her Gluteus maximus. "Yeah, that's probably a good idea, those ones look like they'd fall apart if I did this!" Nina grabbed onto the back of Celine's shorts, gripping them with both hands at the waist, and yanked them up, wedging them up into Celine's backside, popping the threads in the already weakened seams, and pulling them high enough for the white of Celine's underwear to be visible beneath the burn holes."

It get's worse, but some people I talk to seem to like it. :/

Got 2,189 words so far and I'll probably get some more today. Unfortunately I had the beginning and the plot (and subplot) all figured out, but chapter 2 is making me go "wuhhhh".

For now, this moment frozen in time, I have beaten you.

2243 words… and counting…
