64Completition Progress Check 9, S4D

Completition

This is definitely a little offset, but people have commented that they liked the progress checks for various reasons, and I don't want you guys getting too comfortable just yet. There's still another month to go and a lot to do. You've all worked long and hard and I'm very proud of the results, so do what you can to make the final month worth it.

As usual, I am open for questions.

Scary Four Digits

This has been on a lot of peoples' minds lately because 64Digits without Scary Four is not 64Digits. This has been a big tradition of ours for the past few years, and in the site's current state it's looking a little improbable. Toast has gone, and primary entrants like Rez are now busy with the school life.

However, S4D won't go unnoticed this year.

Unless we get another good host (PLEASE COME BACK, TOAST), I plan on hosting this one too. However, I'll be cutting the work time down to one month like the original S4D, so we won't start until October. My reasoning for this includes the Completition entrants, who finish only a month before. Now, a month isn't a lot of break time for us game designers, but Scary Four must commence, so my apologies go out to you and I hope you still enter.

Since I'm not Toast, it'll be a lot smaller scale. However, I'm going to adhere to the usual Scary Four rules and say you do have to do everything from scratch, with a few exceptions. Teams are encouraged; we saw this work very well last year. All in all, I'm looking forward to it and will definitely be entering myself, though having the host enter his own competition (and this one is hairier than the one I'm currently hosting) probably needs some amendments.

Thoughts on S4D? Post them here.

I'm going to force you to see things that you wish you hadn't.

Like Miley Cyrus twerking.

Or just Cyrus in a Hannah Montana costume twerking.

Or maybe you actually DO want to see that…

Here is a list of reasons why Kilin is pulling out of the Completition:

The Twilight Realm was created for the three-month RPG4D competition. However, the longer I work on it, the more I realize I need to go back and rethink some things, and the more I realize this game deserves far more attention than it's currently getting from me. Having a two-hour game with "the difficulty curve of a sinewave" (Cesque) is not what I intended put thousands of hours into, and I want the one game of mine to trigger nostalgia to receive my full attention, rather than getting an update once a week as it currently stands.

I didn't anticipate to be this busy with work, and that plays into a lot of it. I've been kicking myself for a long time and I haven't been able to set aside the time to work on this. If I did submit, it'd have a lot of frustration behind it rather than the heart I was going for, and so, it would only be logical if I scrapped this game until I'm ready to work on it again.

There's very little time left, but I may revisit another jam entry, or just drop out altogether and focus in on 64DCG.

I'm sorry to be a bad example, but I'm proud of all of you.

EDIT: Get out of here, Acid. That has nothing to do with anything ever. =(

EDIT2: Oh, S4D context.

Since Toast is AWOL- I want to host Scary Four Digits this year, I wont be entering so nobody has to worry about any shenanigans in that department and I have given you my credentials in support of my ability to manage the event well.

I can advertise, advise, objectively regulate.

Just wondering, what is Scary four Digits? I've heard of it a bunch of times, but still have no clue :D. Is it some sort of Halloween game making competition? Anyway, I don't have much to say on the competition as I wasn't here for most of it lol.

Scary Four is the local Halloween competition, yes. The goal is to make something Halloween-themed or in the horror genre. It's one of our most successful events so far, and it would be a shame to skip it.

We have several people who want to host Scary Four and would be fit for the job. I think it would be wise to get a list and take a vote. Truth be told, I want to enter as always and hosting would bar that, but I will do it if people need me to.

A yearly Game Development competition where the entries are based around the fundamental themes that fuel Horror, Halloween, among other subjects. It's like having a yearly marathon of free scary games to enjoy. Usually there are prizes involved and entrant Finalists/Winners get a nice badge.

I recommend entering, it's great fun.

Great, you made me feel responsible :(

To be honest, I didn't expect you to finish the game, but for completely different reasons: I got the impression that TTR story ended right as it started getting interesting and that there was some major content to be added after that.

Anyway. I'm adding little details to my game and I think showing them off will be too much of a spoiler at this stage. Actually, screw that, I may post something later . In any case, I'm currently kind of working on the the main screen menu. You know which one…

To be honest, the main story was meant to take a bit of a backseat as you went through and discovered that there were people like you being torn from their worlds, being forced to fight you out of confusion. However, it did pick up in the end, although one of my goals with this rework was to make the story more apparent throughout. The duskflight and the eventide needed to make more appearances, that much I can agree with.

Where did you think it started getting interesting?

I need to take a break from this game, but if you have any further input, especially regarding the story, I think I could really use it.

Are you also adding more stages? I really think your game is solid as it is and now needs a little more content. I had a lot of fun playing it.

Thanks Juurian, I'll definitely have to enter when it's next on :D. Its a pity your stopping your game Kilin(at least that's what I've gotten from the posts, hope I'm wrong lol), as from what I've seen of it it look pretty good :D. I'll have to check it out in a few days and review it(still need to finish my other reviews :D).
