64Completition Progress Check 9, S4D

Completition

This is definitely a little offset, but people have commented that they liked the progress checks for various reasons, and I don't want you guys getting too comfortable just yet. There's still another month to go and a lot to do. You've all worked long and hard and I'm very proud of the results, so do what you can to make the final month worth it.

As usual, I am open for questions.

Scary Four Digits

This has been on a lot of peoples' minds lately because 64Digits without Scary Four is not 64Digits. This has been a big tradition of ours for the past few years, and in the site's current state it's looking a little improbable. Toast has gone, and primary entrants like Rez are now busy with the school life.

However, S4D won't go unnoticed this year.

Unless we get another good host (PLEASE COME BACK, TOAST), I plan on hosting this one too. However, I'll be cutting the work time down to one month like the original S4D, so we won't start until October. My reasoning for this includes the Completition entrants, who finish only a month before. Now, a month isn't a lot of break time for us game designers, but Scary Four must commence, so my apologies go out to you and I hope you still enter.

Since I'm not Toast, it'll be a lot smaller scale. However, I'm going to adhere to the usual Scary Four rules and say you do have to do everything from scratch, with a few exceptions. Teams are encouraged; we saw this work very well last year. All in all, I'm looking forward to it and will definitely be entering myself, though having the host enter his own competition (and this one is hairier than the one I'm currently hosting) probably needs some amendments.

Thoughts on S4D? Post them here.

This blog is depressing :(

I noticed the community wasn't as active as I remembered it was. Are there any theories floating around as to why this is? I mean, I know people come and go (as I have), but I feel the site has hit a new low. There are like 10 active members, and while they are "quality" members, it prevents us from being a relevant indie game community. Relevant meaning thriving, exciting, a place that gets people excited about making games (or whatever they're working on).

Even though it's felt a bit stagnant here, I don't feel like it's a lost cause. I want to help the mods (and whoever is with me) to get this place back to where it was.

For the most part, we're pretty well aware of why site activity has dropped, and it's something we're actively trying to fix. Holding the Completition was an attempt at this, which seemed to work pretty well as I've seen, but ignoring past competitions that brought in site activity isn't going to make this place any better. That's why S4D still needs to happen.

The pessimism of being unable to regain control of the site has spread far, but pessimism never helped anyone, so several of us have been hard at work trying to discern the problem and address it, and hopefully dilute it by bringing attention elsewhere. A resolute few of us (the active ones you see here) aren't ready to give up just yet, but we do need a bit of help getting this place back on its feet.

Thus, the 64DCG was born. The days of the BBQ games and other community games like Sapphire Tears were when the site was most active, because people felt involved. Involving other members is my goal here, so that's why the 64DCG is high priority for me.

I really need to start posting content, but I don't want to do any art assets because they'll just be replaced.

i will help with S4D in whatever way i can. no one should be suggesting to hijack it from Kilin lol. he's one of the more responsible people here. also, why aren't you plugging the 64DCG spreadsheet? it needs more characters!

S4D doesn't come at an ideal time, i'll admit. if it's gonna be stressful for people who have school/real life stuff going on, why not just make the deadline a bit longer?

People, including Rez, have suggested cutting into September. My only issue with this is in my concern for the Completition entrants who are likely burned out by now. Extending it past October 31st would be slightly breaking the atmosphere, and I'd prefer to avoid it. We'll have to see which is the best option.

Oh, yeah, forgot to ask: Are there any size specifications for the album art / trailer?

Are you also adding more stages? I really think your game is solid as it is and now needs a little more content. I had a lot of fun playing it.

Actually, I'm prioritising bringing in all the details I had left out (in particular, adding cutscenes). It sounds counter-effectual, because it has zero to do with actual gameplay… but adding cutscenes and a menu has made the game feel so much more coherent.

I'll definitely add more levels if I have the time (I was also thinking of having "secret" levels unlocked by saving everyone in earlier levels), we'll see. I may not have time to work on the project during the second half of this month…

And to end it on a more interesting note, interesting bugs from this week:

Bug #122: After selecting "Play", menu starts rapidly spinning around and never stops.

Bug #452: Dialogue system oversight causes cats to randomly chat with people on fire.

Bug #630: Placing ladders in the path of characters running to reward the victorious hero with a kiss causes them to run up the ladder and into flames. This wouldn't be an issue per se, but it prevented the game from progressing :(

Bug #892: Bad cutscene scripting causes characters to actually escape the building successfully during the cutscene. Your firetruck arrives and then you win.

Bug #1361: A small bug in the tutorial lets the player royally fuck up the universe. The following screenshot demonstrates a very small possible side-effect of the oversight, on the other end of the scale is the ability to enter some sort of game maker Far Lands where lag keeps rising, the view changes to random areas, and the game begs you to put it out of its misery.

Also, it turns out the game's ladder physics allows them to be used as horizontal bridges. I'm totally leaving that in.

P.S. I hate the clouds and no backgrounds, but meh. I may re-do the former if I have the time, we'll see, but I guess more levels would be better than nicer clouds, huh.

Things I did this week:

- started setting up software on new computer; was struck by indecision on what version of Java to get

- drowned my sorrows by playing Terraria

- did animations for Cut characters that won't get used because I decided to focus on making Walk instead

- tried to get the discounted GMS so I could work on Walk on the new computer because GM8 now refuses to register itself on the new computer

- failed at getting GMS because YoYo doesn't have its key upgrade system in order yet (opened a help desk ticket; naturally they marked it as solved even though my key still doesn't work)

- drowned my sorrows by playing Strike Suit Zero

- accidentally signed up as an artist for somebody's little RPG Maker horror game project

- discovered the joys of getting an RPG Maker game to run; promptly raged at memory bloat

- sketched storyboards for Walk intro

- started sketching out animations for Walk protagonist; quickly realized there could be a lot

- tried to drown my sorrows by finishing watching the Madoka movies (spoiler: it didn't work)

- drew touhous

- tried not to think about my lack of productivity (failed)

- drowned my sorrows by playing Touhou

Yup.

Don't worry about one bad week, colseed. You said the word Touhou so it's okay.

I am definitely in for S4D. I live for horror and I do wanna take my last entry further with a sequel. (which I started a while back but abandoned for some reason…)

I actually did nothing this week or last weekend on my game, however I made some changes during the break.

- Added dead saps as suggested

- Platforms are visible but need tweaking cause they look wierd

- Add sounds to blob and grey fog

- Decreased big sap health

- Made the player energy increase quicker, so he shoots faster

- Added stomp on small slimes as suggested

- Decreased player health

- Slime do damage to the player regardless

I got a lot of work done but it doesn't feel like it. Also as a result of reducing player hp and make slimes damage you, levels can't just be run through any more and boss fights are a lot harder now, I may need to fix that.
