Kilin Eats an Onion

Posted by Castypher on May 11, 2015, 2:14 p.m.

It's been nearly a year since I've posted anything. And with my usual procrastinating buddies coming back and saying things (hello Taizen, Charlo, and colseed), I felt more than a little obligated. My break was for the same reason as Charlo's – people here seemed to stop being interested in game design so I had no reason to post anything here because that's all I do with my time.

So, I went to California this past weekend to see a certain someone. It was a fantastic change of scenery, even though I spent most of my time outside LA. I got to see the ocean and sea lions and chickens (pigeons) and eat oysters and get sand in my hair and get lost in the confusing as fuck city grid system and get honked at by hundreds of angry LA drivers!

I didn't take a single picture!

Except of maybe one chicken (pigeon) that was throwing some grass around like a fucking moron.

I also got to walk around a castle so that was pretty fun too.

And I finally got around to watching Breaking Bad.

So I'm back home now and tired as fuck but a break from game playing and game making has been quite refreshing and now I'm pretty stoked to get back to work. I haven't done much since I got back (except sleep) but here's some stuff I did over the past few months that you might enjoy. Tell me if there's something here that you like and/or think I should finish, because I have a lot of works in progress.

Some screenshots:

Terminys - Unity Port Combat Test

Praecantrix - Some Spellcrafting (pardon the dust, still working on the interface)

Some GIFs:

Egg Simulator 2014 - Lighting Test

Egg Simulator 2014 - Climbing

Taizen's Bitchin' RPG - Basic Combat Engine

Some musics (all WIPs, please don't kill me):

Terminys - Mako Battle

Demon Storm - Maidens of Subjugation (needs instrumentation overhaul)

Praecantrix - Boss 1

Praecantrix - Final Boss (unfinished, cuts at 1:36)

Taizen's Bitchin' RPG - Another Bitchin' Boss (unfinished, unchanged since last posted - sorry Steven)

Taizen's Bitchin' RPG - Bitchin' Boss 3 (needs better depth in instrumentation)

We should make a fighting game where everyone on the site draws the same character and those sprites will be the characters.

We can call it 50 Shades of Fists.

I didn't expect this blog to be revived. But now I have a sudden desire to go do more pixels.

Thanks Toast.

I like your shotgun, Charlo.

I like your nightmare fuel, Taizen.

And then I realized I have to draw backgrounds and I just really suck at that.

Okay, this time for a pinch of effort.

I don't like pixels ever, hence my smattering of suckish placeholders until Charlie glosses them over for me. Can you see why.

@Kilin The backgrounds (the tiles, I mean) in those gifs are actually really sophisticated. It's not so much pixel art, but more kind of arty or anime, which is more versatile anyway. You should get into vector graphics.

Btw I'm redrawing every sprite anyone dares to post on this website from now on

Surely you're talking about the tiles in general, rather than just the backgrounds themselves? I like this style quite a bit because of its simplicity, but I've had a very difficult time actually conceptualizing the backdrop, because doing large images is well beyond my skill, and I may have to settle for contrasted tiles or something.

I looked into vector graphics a while back, but haven't done anything since. I'm not sure where to use that at the moment outside of mobile, with all the glorious resolution variety.
