[DSG] Pixel Art + Screens

Posted by DSG on Aug. 17, 2010, 4:08 a.m.

So something different. I thought I'd redesign the ship, and document how it comes along. So, here's the new ship!

1. I started with a really basic sketch.

2. Gave it form, added some details.

3. Finished with the details, for now at least. added guns on the sides and engines on the top back.

4. Recolored the ship, so I could go over each shape with gradient.

5. Began with the lightest pixels first. Added a shine to various parts of the ship.

6. Pixeled in in the mid-tones.

7. finished with the pixeled shading and filled the rest in.

8. Opened the sprite in Ps and did some brushwork, put it back in the GM image editor and added some more details including the exhaust ports by the top engines, a few details on the body of the ship.

9. recolored in Ps and gave it a 2-tone metallic look.

10. Pixeled some lights and made them glow.

Oh… and by the way, since nobody commented last time on it, how do you like the new HUD? [these screens are from a few days ago]

btw. new avatar.

EDIT:

also new. Just look at those ladders in action.

You should definitely make some spriting tutorials.. And some tutorials for those insane graphic effects you use to make your games look so great. And as for the HUD, I think it looks great but it would also be pretty cool if you added more detail AROUND it. For example, pipes coming out of the HEALTH bar, connecting it to the border of the screen. Idk if that makes any sense to you but yeah. :P

HUD's a bit plain, considering the raw amount of detail and love given to everything else. It's functional, it's just underwhelming compared to the rest. Then again, that helps it stay clear at all times, which has it's upsides…

Thanks for the info. Normally, I stop at 5 and jump to 10.

I like the HUD. It's simple and doesn't take up a lot of room and doesn't detract attention away from the actual game.

Nice work on that ship, by the way.

The only thing that bothers me now is the letter E in the HUD =P It's too curly.

That's amazing. I second the request for a tutorial :p

I found myself hunched close to my monitor, staring in disbelief, and then I realised I was actually drooling. I kid you not.

That is the most beautiful pixel art I have ever seen. I have saved your example and game screenshots, because I'm now inspired to try and improve my pixel art again.

I want to hire you! :D

I'm just okay with the HUD. For some reason, I feel like they clash with the rest of the game. Like the font should have more AA or something.

They feel a bit obstructive for how simple they are, maybe they can fade away when there's no action going on?

Well… I don't like it. I think the mechnical HUD in the ooooooold days was more in line with the game (style-wise). This one looks simple, but doesn't fit the rest (size is ok, though). Oh, and why are health and spirit a short distance away from the borders?

The gear shows up sometimes, when you defeat a boss or gain an item. i was working on a shrunken down version of it to always be there but if its like how it used to be itll take up room and cover up shit.
