[DSG] Depths VIDEO! Pyros and Spirit Lantern

Posted by DSG on May 23, 2012, 12:18 p.m.

Here's a video of the new lighting engine in action in the Maibuu Canopies, as well as a demonstration of the Pyros upgrade. Sorry about the video/audio being out of sync, and I forgot to pause my music and didn't feel like re-recording, I know most of you don't like brutal slam death metal, my apologies.

Seriously, I'd pay for this IF YOU'D FINISH THE DAMNED THING ALREADY. :3

Hi what are you stuck on with level design? Game looks great, graphically I would just recommend brightening the character so that he stands out from the background. Toast's link is also great (I notice there are a LOT of objects obstructing the view consistently). Here's an example of using contrast well:

The game is Frogatto, and suffers slightly from the artist's problem referenced to by Toast.

I think a lot of people really do play games for their story and art. Even if there is not as much gameplay, as long as it is easy to control and simple to play once you get the hang of it, it will be awesome. … At least thats my video game tastes. I liked halo1, cod4, metroid prime zero mission, MP2 echoes, zelda, etc etc. All are easy to control.

But honestly I think the direction you are taking the game is perfect. Visually and storyline. Gameplay would be dependent on how easy it is to ACTUALLY HIT the enemies. Metroid Zero Mission, for example, many of the enemies were positioned to be hit by the player easily.

Horrible music, but pretty rad graphics. Looks pretty fun. Are you still making it in Game Maker?
With GAME MAKER STUDIO (for only a measly $500), he could publish to Windows, Android, and iOS!

EDIT: But if it actually converts it properly, I'd say it might actually be worth it for an amazing game like this would be.

The music is not in-game, I believe, but just bg music on his PC. After all, he said "I forgot to pause my music and didn't feel like re-recording".

Also, he is making it in Game Maker, using 2D drawing functions (no D3D functions at all, which makes the game super inefficient, but whatever)

I even watch(ed) some anime just because the art is beautiful, while the story is meh. :P

Works the other way, too. Bad art and story is generally enough to make me quit playing a game, even if the rest of the game is decent.

Sometimes I'm playing a game and the gameplay is total garbage, but it looks so good and the story is so epic.

Or so I thought way back when I was 13.

Well, for me the gameplay can suck as long as everything else is all right. Such is the case of the Mother series. I don't like their combat at all, but everything else is done well.
