-DSG- Rapid Progress + SPRITING TUTORIAL :D

Posted by DSG on July 4, 2012, 10:13 p.m.

My screen recorder is on the fritz, so here are some screen shots ^^ As you can see, I've made some quick progress. With the game completed in my mind, the rest is a cakewalk.

[EDIT] I made a quick tutorial below, how to make a 96x128 pixel boss sprite in 39 minutes!!

I can't seem to be able to come up with ambient music for the RUUN TEMPLE [the underground ruins] for the life of me. Any musicians out there who want to write a series of fitting melodies? I'll end up remixing it if I like it lol

This is the mask of the FIRST GOD BOSS, DASHU. This took 39 minutes, and that includes the 10 minutes or so it took to draw up a tutorial.

hope you can tell what i'm talking about

Oh boy. Even with photoshop effects, I'm impressed. I usually spend a good 30 minutes just deliberating how the lineart should look.

Maybe I should give your technique a try sometime… Might be interesting to see my style merged with that highly polished look

I approve of this tutorial. Finally someone who doesn't hoard their talent and secrets. +1 for you.

Multiply, huh? Looks like I'm going to love Photoshop.

It's not usually a case of hoarding secrets, it's just that trying to explain ones work method to others can be a pain in the ass.

DSG, that's looking really good. I use a similar shading method in GIMP for most of my high-res artwork, just a lot brighter… Interesting tutorial though.

Let's not get into the fact that I consider 39 minutes four times too long for a static sprite of that size…

Or just being far too lazy to write anything about them.
That too. You still owe us those promised blogs about music. Classical laziness. :3

Begin by explaining Harmony, and how to achieve it.

Tendency to skim is one of the many drawbacks of having a big ego.

What makes you think I skimmed? I'm implying that, tutorial included, _I_ would consider that too much time for a sprite of that size. I'm hyper, and get fustrated if I can't do something quickly.

DSG is actually doing this at what is considered the average time per-frame that is expected by most game studios still using 2D.

That's fine. Actually, there are some apparently musical people at various institutions around the world still trying to figure out what it is, why some people like the sounds of some music, but not others, etc. Trick question.

Music is all about perception; the composer can only compose music they enjoy listening to, but the downside is that others may not enjoy it in the same way.

Everytime I see a blog about Depths, it gives me inspiration to work on video games again.
