Really, Really old Drawings

I did these a few years ago when I was about 10 years old and really like tanks and stuff like that. They were drawn with a pencil and the pictures were taken with a webcam. I know how ridiculous that sounds. I’m saving up to buy a scanner so I’ll try to upload some of my more recent ones.

They’re not great, but they’re alright. I hope you like them.

The Rant

Yoyogames annoys me quite a lot. First off, what kind of a name is “YoYogamesâ€?? It’s awfully misleading. Personally, I think you couldn’t have chosen a more pathetic name. Someone who knows nothing about them would think they have something to do with yo-yos. Here are some of the things that bother me about them:

-They put their banner on gm7.

Why? Did they make it? No! Mark Overmars did. But guess what? His name isn’t anywhere on it! Even on the front page of yoyogames.com they don’t have his name. Mark made gamemaker. NOT Yoyogames.

-You can’t download old versions on gamemaker. This is probably because they don’t have yoyogame’s name on them. So really, why can’t you download the old versions? Yes, they have less features, but at least they would work on older computers.

-You have to register to download gm7. I didn’t want to register my name on yoyogame’s site. So what I did was make up a name and use one of my friends emails to download it.

-False advertising.

Uhh… no, that’s not true. They just get members to upload their own resources on their site. And they use the old resource packs from the original gamemaker site. Yoyogames has done nothing…

No. It’s not that easy. I’ve seen very few professional games made with gamemaker. Not that it’s impossible to make a professional game.

Ok, I’ll admit that they made big improvements to the gamemaker site. But personally, I preferred the old one. The play online thing is okay too, but I never use it because I just download games if I want to play them later.

Other than these improvements, YoYogames have done absolutely nothing. There are plenty of other gamemaker communities like 64digits where you can rate, download, and upload games.

YoYogames taking over gamemaker has really annoyed me. It brought little good and soon people won’t even know that Mark Overmars was the one who first came up with gamemaker. What do you (64d community) think about it?

Other Interesting Things

-I abandoned my tds game, but I have started on a point and click adventure game. I have made quite a lot of progress on it and already started work on the second level. I will write about it in my second blog. I’m still thinking of a name for it.

Questions

1.What do you think about yoyogames? And my rant about them?

2. Is there a rivalry between the gmg on 64digits? I haven’t been posting on 64d for too long, but I have had my account for a while here. I know there are lots of gmg members on here too like cactus for example though.

3. Should I review another game? I would like to try to improve my reviewing skills, but would you read another one of my reviews?

Mark wasn't forced to do this. He is the one who has decided the intellectual rights should be differed.

After reading the interview with Mark Overmars in GMTech Magazine, I think I finally understand what the intentions of YoYoGames are. They're trying to be the YouTube of gaming, eventually turning Game Maker into the standard for Internet gaming (replacing Flash). This is something Mark Overmars himself wants and he intended for YoYoGames to do this for him. YoYoGames hasn't really taken over. If anything, Game Maker (as a program) will improve at a faster pace.

But these aren't official.

Juju: Yes, it was his choice. I'm just saying that it was a bad choice.

PM: You're right too.

Some of the "user-created" resources on that site are reuploads of the original resource packs.

And some include illegally distributed programs. YYG needs more moderation, at least in that section.
Also, myself & a few other South Africans are unable to download games from YYG.

F1ak3r: They're racist. [/joke]

I don't really like YoYo games either. I remeber JoshDreamland's blog about how he made the other mode of GM and then YoYo took his idea, just saying "Oh! We were working on something like this too!".

Ah, I started a Point and Click adventure game too recently.
