Dear Pope Benedict XVI

Fuck you.

In a recent speech, you equated atheism with Nazism. I am not a Nazi and the two concepts have nothing to do with each other.

Yes, we live in an age where religion is quickly dying out. In the past, religion served to 'fill in the gaps' of human knowledge. Whenever science has come along to fill those gaps with the truth, those clinging to their religious beliefs stop the progress of science, and for many centuries, religion has held back the human race and our progression forward.

Today we live in an era dominated by science and technology; new discoveries are being made every day, and we know more about the universe and it's workings than anyone in history. This is a scary thing for religion, because it's purpose of 'filling in the gaps' is quickly becoming vestigial. It is, of course, no wonder that a large number of religious bodies are aggressively fighting against this new era of humanity, and it's not surprising to watch them go to such ridiculous extremes as to make comparisons with Hitler and Nazism. Pathetic, really.

But for calling me a Nazi: Fuck you.

The Scientific Method is a methodology, science is the claims that it makes. None of those claims are ever certain. Therefore, you believe science not because it is watertight but because it is reasonable estimation of reality. It doesn't matter if it evolves or not because it will always fall short of an absolute truth.

Your first sentence is wrong, Juju, and so I didn't bother reading the rest. Science IS the method, as far as I am concerned. Knowledge is the result. Science is a search for knowledge, while Religion is, like knowledge, a set of claims that seeks to be a replacement for scientific knowledge (knowledge gained through science)

Be should all believe in absolutely nothing like Juju does and see where it gets us. After all, why study science if it might all be an illusion? Who cares if it leads to great advancements that benefit the whole of mankind. It could easily be all imaginary anyway. We may never know either way, but I know for certain that we'll never know if we simply don't look. Let's just smoke weed instead. You know, something productive.

I believe Extravisual has the best of all 95…no…96 comments.

…Besides this of course.

Definitions depend on usage. In "We use science", science means the scientific method. In "We have science", science means scientific knowledge.

Now you've won the whole argument. :/

HeroofTime55 14 years, 2 months ago

Lapixx, there is no need to address points that follow from a flawed premise.

Lapixx 14 years, 2 months ago

There is no need to argue with people who don't want to hear anything but the things they already know/assume.

That said, I'll pray for you :P
