Coloraze Contest: Day Three

Posted by Siert on Feb. 3, 2007, 9:40 a.m.

Well, since I haven't been able to come up with any good levels for Coloraze, I'm holding a contest for who can make the best level. I'm going to be releasing another version with all contestent's levels included! So make a level and post a link to it here. This is the second day of the contest and hopefully I will be able to carry the contest through the weekend (one more day). Judging will be on Sunday (one day from now).

*update: redone, download again*

-Download-

*note: you need to extract the executable to save the level files*

Notice, that version doesn't have the normal levels in it. If you want your level to be included, submit it before this blog is off the front page.

Judges:

twisterghost

kevboh

serpex

Contestants:

darktemp7 (GMC) with Look Before You Leap

Graydon77222 with Exposier, Prime Hunter, Invisaball and Lock and Key

serprex with Linear, TowerLabyrinth and NLinear

MrPacman with Confusion, Centered and Detours

HandrawnMan with Complications

Marbs with Don't Go Blue

Kenon with Through the Rabbit Hole and Back

GTVG with Don't Get Red Get Blue

For those of you who want to see how the game is layed out, check this out 64Digits Topic the real game is layed out a little differently and the level editor looks different, but then you can see what my levels look like. Do NOT, I repeat, do NOT submit games made with other level editors in different versions, only use the level editor on this page. (up above)

To try the other contestants games, you need to download Coloraze (the download on this page), extract it, put it in the same folder as the level you want to play, start Coloraze, then go to load level, then select the level you want to play.

Please post your levels and try to make the best level for Coloraze, now, GO!

I figure they should follow a learning curve,so stuff like NLinear and LookBeforeYouLeap would be around the end while stuff like PrimeHunter would be at the beginning. Please let me know if you are going to have a GameReview section,as that could require some conversation to how to set it up and give level design credit.

Explain what review section you would like, I have credit in my version of the game right now.

Like if the person presses right/left on the menu of levels,it goes to a quick overview of the level and how it is unique and stuff. You might even come up with reason to give the 2 directions sepearte info showings. You could easilly right a script to show the text.

I like serpex's idea. For example on the left you could have a description of the level, and on the left you could have stats like the difficulty the place it got in this contest and the creator of the level.

GameReview

Coloraze is a nice game, easy to learn. It has a few little places that could use improvement…but they may just make it lose its charm…It has nice music…

LevelReviews

*Lists are ordered from best to worst.

0LockAndKey=Very nice level design.I noticed it has similarites with my levels with the end being visible right away. However,it is also open ended.Key order isn't predefined. It has gimmicks, like only 1 side of the ladder really needs to be climbed. The invisible blocks were numbersome, but predictable to the point of not becoming a factor which made me feel I had no control.Suitable name, though LocksAndKeys is more accurate.

1Don'tGoBlue=It was quick and sweet, and had 2 parts. The only flaws were the last jump was redundant and the red changer in the middle.I liked how the key was placed,I missed it the first time.Perfect name.

2LookBeforeYouLeap=This is wonderfully made, though I suggest a screenshot of it in the editor be included with the .zip.I couldn't solve it until I looked decided to play with the mouse cursor in the editor. Some of the parts would of been nice with the keys, and its openess is brilliant, setting it so that it isn't always trial and error.Every flop discovers more of the layout, and allows us to explore further. Its actual solution doesn't require that much, and so perhaps it should be called FlockOfHerrings.

3Exposier=I liked this one.It had lots of stuff that never came into play, which made it difficult to predict. This made it lose some linearity, while still having conditions before moving on.Was the name suppose to be Exposure?

4Invisaball=A mediocre level,it was really a lot of moving around and finding solutions invalidated by invisible walls. Most cases could be repaired easilly, and it only took at most 2 tries to bypass.I found the invisible walls didn't come into play much, though nothing else sticks out.Perhaps it should be called Generic?

5PrimeHunter=This was a really short level, and a good intro. Its first set of steps could of been more spread.Because I couldn't climb the breakable ladder,I took it as a red herring and jumped through the breakable floor, and into the purple converter. After that,I ran over a small gap that didn't catch me and ended. This level gets a 5 because it is a good intro to stuff, like red herrings.[Meaning keep the floor gimmick, its a valuable lesson.]I don't get the title, though Primer would be a good title.

7ThroughTheRabbitHoleAndBack=The fall beside the column of red squares shouldn't have a breakable block.I'm afraid I'm unaware of this gimmick, and I believe the README requires an explanation. To note on AliceInWonderland references, why not call the README EATME?I like how this level has a little SubPlot. Please elaborate how to rabbit jump. The reason I'm laying it at 7 is because its all about a single gimmick. However,it does have a few nice extras, like breaking ladders.I like the name to the level, though it would seem you climb up before climbing down the hole…

6Confusion=Said to be hard,I was let down.It had to be tried a few times due to issues and the main problem was realizing the need to do a verticle jump.It wasn't really confusing, but perhaps a LoneHerring would be a suitable name?

8Centered=More linear than Linear. There was one time where it could of caught me,but I followed the path and ended where I could of been forced to backtrack. It also was too nice, placing invisible walls in places so that I wouldn't go out of bounds. This should be called Linear+.

9Complications=I went backwards the first time, finished it easy.I thought going backwards was what made it easy…but it turns out that going forwards is the same thing. This level is not linear, but its lack of barriers is what makes it fail. Most complications were because invisible walls had to be predicted, which wasn't hard since they were EVERYWHERE.This should be called Exploration, though its not large enough to truly live up to such a name.

PersonalLevels

0TowerLaybrinth=A wonderful show of the vertical jump.2 sides to test ones key pressing,a precision fall, laybrinth to fiddle in and a need to stay white.

1NLinear=A perfect trial.Though the N is for Non,it is actually linear.A nice challenge,it requires patience.

2Linear=Its a linear level, overall. Its main purpose is teaching a few gimmicks.

Conclusion

Well this has taken awhile,2 games were submitted WHILE I wrote this!If any disagree with my voting, remember:IT'S _MY_ VOTE!!!Take that you anti-democratic dweebs…

@Siert=Are you going to merge these with the original, and have the original's level be a tutorial?

QUERY=What order should the levels be in,meaning that the tutorial like ones should come first.

2xComment because this isn't part of the review.

Perhaps credit should be given by having the creator's name written below the level's name in a small font?
