The Family That Prays Together, Separates

Attention Catholic mothers: please do not force your atheist 16-year-old son to put everything aside to watch a church programme that is in your native tongue that you didn't bother to teach him- it will be annoying to him on multiple levels. Do not slap, scratch, or repeatedly hit them in an attempt to force them to pay attention. It does not help your case, and it makes your beliefs look crazier in the end.

Attention atheist sons: Do not put up such a good argument as to back your religious mother into a corner, forcing her to call out your father. Make no attempts to explain to her that you cannot go to hell if you don't believe it exists, because her return argument is 100% guaranteed to be that you will go anyway.

Attention fathers of atheist sons who are arguing with their moms: If your stance on the matter is that religion is corrupt and faith is not, explaining why you don't go to church every Sunday, like your wife would like to have happen, find an easier way to break the news than "you're wrong; you can take him to church but you can't literally force him to believe in what you believe, that's his choice," and refrain from explaining exactly why religion is corrupt to the religious wife because you can hear the shattering in their voice when they are in denial about what you say. Especially do not raise your voice in the matter when Religious Wife decides that it's your fault that the child is "broken" because of your infrequent church attendance.

The thought process for a long time is that as advances in Science become dominant, religion would soon dissapear. But that has failed to happen and in fact christianity is on the rise.
That's a very big assumption and it doesn't disprove that religion is getting smaller. Could you provide some evidence?

Quote:
I think we are starting to see a shift toward more tolerant based religion, as several people are placing the peaceful message of Jesus above the angry teachings of God from the old testament, as the bible teaches anyway.
It's interesting how as more and more aspects of a religion become taboo and disproven, the followers of that religion become "more tolerant". Another word for this is "rationalisation". As for the teachings of the old testament, why are they in the Bible, if the Bible does not teach them?

But really guys, when an athiest is bashing christianity and wants it gone, your essentially becoming a mirror image of the overly-devoted and irrational christians who bash homosexuality or can't wait for other religions and athiesm to be gone. No offense, to anyone.
I'm an atheist and I want Christianity to be gone. So by your reasoning, I am no better than a homophobe. How is that not offensive? It's disgusting.

There you go guys.

Most of the increase is in once-communist nations or in communist nations that now are allowing religion, ex. China.

But honestly guys, I've been in the religion debate one too many times on other community sites, and they tend to split members apart as well as getting little done because both sides refuse to reevaluate their believes. So I'm gonna obstain from future religious arguments here, being a new member I'd really hate to get started here on the wrong foot :)

I'd still like you to address the idea that I'm no better than a homophobe. Either justify it or retract it. You started this argument, I hope you realise. I'm merely telling you why you're wrong.

The first article didn't provide any evidence. It does mention this…

Quote:
A few years ago, European scientists sniggered when studies in the United States for example, at Harvard and Duke universities showed a correlation between faith, prayer and recovery from illness. Now 1,200 studies at research centers around the world have come to similar conclusions
…which is not only irrelevant but makes it hard to take the rest of the article seriously.

Futhermore, if the increase in religion is because of more of the world population being allowed to be religious, we can't count these people in your original statement:

Quote:
The thought process for a long time is that as advances in Science become dominant, religion would soon dissapear.
A decrease in enforced atheism isn't relevant to the effect scientific advances are having on the number of religious people. Again, your reasoning did not disprove the original suggestion.

Snore. Another religion debate that completely misses the point. Incidentally, if anyone posts any pro/anti-religion arguments, have a personal "fuck you" from me to you.

I'm sorry to hear you're having problems at home. Your mother and father are arguing over what they feel is best for you. They have, and always will have, your best interests at heart.

I'm not even arguing about religion, I couldn't give a fuck if you're religious or not. I just want to get the facts straight.

…anyone who compares me to a homophobe gets more than a "personal fuck you" from me.

Alright, if you insist. Keep in mind not all christians are homophobes, I would call it safe to make the assumption that most are not, obviosly assumptions only reach so far though. But if you lack the tolerance and the respect for someone for their believes and you say you want their believe erradicated, how are you any different than other people who fail to respect other people and their believes?

Like I said though. I'm done, nobody on the internet ever evaluates their personal beliefs or philosphies; theists and atheists alike, making argument virtually pointless. And I don't wanna get started here on the wrong foot like I said.

I want to slap Juju for posting it before I got a chance to- but yeah.

Regardless of how stupid your parents act, it's because they love you. If they didn't love you you wouldn't know right from wrong in the first place and would probably be on your own, an obese teen wino looking for a fuck to give.

I know the whole religion thing bugs you- but you're still technically a kid. don't make a scene.

Respecting a person and respecting whatever it is that has made them think the way they do and believe the things they do are entirely different. I love, respect and tolerate everyone. I don't hate Christians, I hate Christianity. A homophobe hates not only homosexuality but necessarily hates all homosexuals. See the difference now?

I disagree with your adaptation ideas.

Religion used to have a lot more rituals and traditions that they would instruct, but the people decided to be more tolerant to what the bible is actually saying, not as much as some implications theyve made from it.

But I also disagree that its more popular. New people are following it but at the same time the new generation is abandoning it.

Thanks, Cyrus.

I don't think either of them will budge until I move out though. :I
