8-bit the cheap way

Posted by Taizen Chisou on July 26, 2012, 12:13 a.m.

So instead of learning some complicated tracker BS to make 8-bit soundy songs and tiring of how obvious GXSCC use is, I just loaded up some waveform samples into FL Studio and tried writing songs using that.

Here's an old song that's been converted: http://soundcloud.com/taizenchisou/what

And now here's an attempt at an original song using this: http://soundcloud.com/taizenchisou/8bitdumbness

I dunno, works well enough for me! :V

Any suggestions/ideas/comments/etc to make this sound a little more legit?

The FLstudio version is better, hands down.

There is more variation between the sounds and it's more lively.

You can almost imagine someone falling asleep and dying during the game while listening to the GSXCC version, imo.

Well, then, I suppose I should get to work on converting all the old GSXCC-made songs :V

I think everything sounds better than GSXCC.

P.S. I like the beginning of 8bitdumbness but then it gets less interesting.

P.P.S. Your boss music does indeed sound a lot like FF, but reminds me more of some particular track from either FF4, FF5 or FF6 whose name I can't remember.

How fitting, I got less interested later on.

I haven't played 5 or 6, so I wouldn't know :<

GSXCC is shit because it does not emulate 8-bit percussion, as this was originally done through a PCM channel with low bitrate samples on the NES.
Sure, let's go with this.

complicated tracker BS
Funny, I was the one who refused to learn the complicated Sequencer BS in order to make music.

When you've got time, try a tracker. They're easy.

I'll listen to your 'tunes just now.

EDIT: 'k, listened. Here's the critique on these.

They sound 'OK', and using samples creates an adequate sound. But one slight problem: The samples are just a bit out of tune.

In 'what', I got the impression that the part where the main melody came in wasn't on-beat.

Otherwise, good job. I'd still recommend trying a dedicated tracker though.
