Dracula 13 beta released

Posted by Yaru on Oct. 12, 2012, 5:37 a.m.

My entry for the Scary4Digits competition is complete. But I'm not gonna file it until I've had some random people checking it to make sure it's glitch-free. So go ahead, grab the complete game, play thru it and see if you can find something I've missed.

Basically, this is a mashup of Super Mario Bros. 3, Castlevania, Splatterhouse 2, The Legend Of Zelda, and Adventure Island III. Enjoy.

… I feel torn between the urge to give up and to fly into a rage-induced marathon of game development in an attempt to crush you… I'm leaning more towards giving up, though…

This looks great. I'll play it when I'm back on a GM friendly machine… Next month probably…

I liked my title suggestion better.

That's actually an unfair advantage, by the rules.

Well I'm a bit drunk, so my responses will be blunt and honest. I think that's what you need! You get too much praise where you could use some serious work.

Animations and graphics as a whole are (mostly) consistent and nice, but the default particle effects (jumping for example) stand out. If you're going for retro, go all in or nothing. Otherwise, this is a good style that you seem to do well.

The music is…how to put this politely…boring and noisy. Honestly I think music is your number one weakness, and it detracts horribly from your games that would otherwise be very high quality. Look up Mega or some of our other local chiptune artists. That was my biggest turn-off for Shattered World as well.

You show your proficiency as a programmer by developing mechanics that were popular back then, but you're also showing that you have zero originality. This is a blatant Mario clone and a pretty boring one at that, and while it's obvious that you receive most of your inspiration from old games, it seems to be all that you get your inspiration from. For once, I'd like to see you make something remotely original. You have the potential to make really great stuff if you stop mimicking other games.

You said yourself at some point that using default window dimensions makes you look like a "noob". If that's what you think, then what does making Mario clones make you look like?

You guys can rate me on my harshness later, but this all needs to be said. You've got enormous potential to create some good stuff, and I think you're inhibiting yourself by making clones. We've all seen enough of these games and quite frankly, some of us are sick of them. And if this honest criticism is too much, then your ego is misplaced.

Also, we found this out last year with Purianite's entry. Blood does not equal scary. Blood does not equal Halloween. This is dull for Halloween and doesn't fit in horror.

Instead of submitting your entry early, take the remaining two weeks to brush up on a few things. In its current state, your main advantage is graphics, and that only goes so far.

You know, you could be accused of exploiting nostalgia

Sheesh, I don't have internet access at home! I gotta replace my avatar with some text about that.

Sent an appeal PM. Removed all the violating stuff. Replaced the game file with a dud, too (since there's no way to just hide the game topic nor save the data to avoid retyping). Anyone downloading it before deadline is in to a surprise.
