A first look at my RPG

Posted by death on May 2, 2012, 12:27 p.m.

i got a small tileset so far and a few enemies. as you can see it's going to be an action-rpg. the main character sprite has already been redrawn better, i just haven't animated the new version yet.

i'm a bit worried about the size of an RPG and what kind of commitment it's going to take to dedicate the next 3 months of my life to building a virtual world. i'm not a graphical guy, i'm not that good with designing rooms to look pretty or making tilesets. i like to design rooms that will challenge someone (like a puzzle or platform game) so building RPG rooms isn't much fun for me…

i also realize that if the game needs to be large enough to enjoy (even for a few hours) i need to plan ahead and decide how many rooms is this world going to be? even a small number like 8x8 rooms is a lot of work, that's 64 total rooms! and than i have to decide what size is each room? i think i'm going with 800x800 (for now) it's a nice size for a room using this resolution, also the room editor fits in one screen so i don't have to do any scrolling to see everything.

so i have a question for you's, what size are you planning for your RPG?

additional notes:

- tiles are 16x16

- 3 layers are used to make the rooms

- tiles in a standard snes-rpg perspective, not zelda perspective!

Zelda is pretty RPG and most of the rooms are puzzle-based.

As for the graphics, they could use less contrast. The palette hurts my eyes a bit.

My current idea: 640x480 locations made of 16x16 tiles, 64 locations on the world map (randomly generated/placed). Oddly enough, 64 locations feels kind of small for a randomly generated world…

yeah for a randomly generated world that might be kind of small. hell i plan for a world the same size basically but i gotta hand-craft each room lol.

Deciding how big your game world is going to be before considering what you're going to put in that space is silly.

Also,

does not compute

most snes rpgs (chrono, FF, tales of, star ocean, etc) used a 45* angle for the perspective. Zelda uses a top down that shows all sides of a wall, which doesn't make any sense, thus i'm not using it.

i know what i'm going to put into the space, there are 6 terrains, 6 tilesets. it's mostly going to be filled with just environment and spawning enemies (using a strange system) as well as towns. the overworld is similar to the first Zelda, it's just there as a map in between dungeons basically. so there won't be too much puzzle/obstacles in the overworld. however many things may act as road stoppers unless you have a certain item on you.

The character looks sad. Did his puppy die?

lol yeah this character isn't so good looking. and i dont think his face is normally like that, must be a strange effect from shrinking an image in paint xD

Well if you look at Baldur's Gate it had some very challenging puzzles built into the rooms and none of us taking part in the comp has a huge team for content, think the best way is to focus on gameplay and originality (puzzles are a great way to achieve that) rather than huge areas. But that is just me rambling and trying to apply that to our game as well lol.

The games is looking good so far, we are using 32x32 tiles (1024X768 res) and looking at only making a small town (really small town).

Keep up the good work :)

I like what I'm seeing from some of you guys in this competition.

The colors are too bright in contrast. Hurts my eyes if I look for too long.

idk i tried darkening them but i didn't like it as much =\

i was kinda going for a bright and colorful world much like older NES rpgs.
