Restarting the minecraft map!

Now that I've got your attention, I was thinking that the minecraft map is getting really big and expansive. It's cool to have a ton of completed stuff on a server, but the server grows so fast that it's hard to keep up, and when something is done, we kind of move on and abandon whatever we were working on before.

What do you guys think of restarting the map every month?

Basically on the first of each months, we'd zip up the current map, make it available in an archive for anyone to download and play in single player (or for us to go back to later), and then start fresh with a new map.

It's just an idea, and I know a lot of people have invested a lot of time into their stuff, so I don't know if anyone would want to restart, but it's a thought. What do you guys think of it?

Edit: Kabob brought up a cool idea of just moving the spawn point, instead of creating a whole new map. This would allow people to warp back to the old spawn to look at/work on their projects, while encouraging others to start fresh in the new area.

Hmm it's an interesting idea to say the least. I kinda like the sound of it, just don't really like the idea of losing everything especially since I still haven't finished what I've been working on this whole time :P

I had a hard time getting a good space when I was allowed in the server, I support this Bill.

Yeah, I was actually going to suggest this idea :P. Sucks because I never got to finish any of my projects, but if it can be saved I don't care. A month might be a bit short, so let's see how it works. Also, if there's anyway to convert the current map into the new way of map saving or whatever, do that.

Edit:

Wouldn't it be awesome if a server could contain multiple worlds? Sort of like the Nether, so we'd be able to go back to old maps, and maybe have them be uneditable, so just for exploration.

I say restart.

This makes all of my projects useless, I wont be playing if the server gets reset. I build stuff to last =/ Though I guess wasting time on minecraft isn't necessarily a good thing =p

Why not just move the spawn point far away? We get all the new area we want with the benefit of being able to warp to our old locations. Just moving the spawn point 15000 in any direction would be like being on a new map.

Kam: A server can run multiple maps (off different ports), but it's practically the same as connecting to a different server - you can't migrate your items between the worlds.

Kabob: that's actually an awesome idea. Not as cool as a clean slate, because it doesn't force people to restart new towns, but I like it.

Almost everyone so far seems to want to restart, so may we'll give it a try…I don't know if moving the spawn is possible though - is it?

I say don't do it. We have so many awesome places built and I think it would suck to lose all of it. :(

I like Kabob's idea, maybe with a warp to old spawn. Obsidia might even be far enough for a new spawn, or at least close to it.

Yeah, that sounds like a pretty good idea. :D

I agree with kabob, I'll quit if there are monthly resets. Just move the spawn and set the old spawn to a warp point.
