Restarting the minecraft map!

Now that I've got your attention, I was thinking that the minecraft map is getting really big and expansive. It's cool to have a ton of completed stuff on a server, but the server grows so fast that it's hard to keep up, and when something is done, we kind of move on and abandon whatever we were working on before.

What do you guys think of restarting the map every month?

Basically on the first of each months, we'd zip up the current map, make it available in an archive for anyone to download and play in single player (or for us to go back to later), and then start fresh with a new map.

It's just an idea, and I know a lot of people have invested a lot of time into their stuff, so I don't know if anyone would want to restart, but it's a thought. What do you guys think of it?

Edit: Kabob brought up a cool idea of just moving the spawn point, instead of creating a whole new map. This would allow people to warp back to the old spawn to look at/work on their projects, while encouraging others to start fresh in the new area.

I believe if you give yourself /setspawn privs in hey0 then you can move it anywhere. Its easy to manually edit the warps file to add a new warp anywhere, so just do that then /setspawn in that location. Of course with hey0 being so glitchy, I have no idea if /setspawn still works.

Spawn relocation sounds good.

Idk, I kinda like the idea of having a giant collection of things we've done. (err kabobs idea fies that)

(Also, front page is kabobulated by the large tetris pic)

Spawning into a new area will be refreshing every time I die. Although restarting would have us build new things, we can build new things on an infinitely large map anyways and it's cool seeing the world progressively grow.

We build new things anyway lol, thats why we went from 2 towns to 50 in just a few weeks.

If I lost Rune / The Abyss, I'd quit. Just saying. :(

Nothing has stopped them from doing it right now. Awesome pic btw.

Good to see i'm not the only one attached to my creations.

Yeah. If anything, we can create an underspawn equivalent at bedrock. I'd offer to fill in the bottom at bedrock with water 3-4 blocks deep so that we can jump down into it safely. Stairs / ladders piss me off most of the time and if someone does destroy the land above, it's not a fatal fall.

I'm cool with restarting.

My problem with just moving the spawn is that the map is large and laggy. Completely restarting the map will help with that. It is ridiculous to be the only person on late at night, and yet still get horrifying amounts of lag.

I don't want to do the monthly respawn thing though. Only when things get stale.

Me steven kabob, kit, etc were debating some ideas. What I came up with

To save the old map, but start a new one, with a restriction on how far you can travel. we will build a centralized cluster of cities, then small towns on the outskirts. Then we can make arenas, mining areas, challenges, such as fighting mobs, traveling through mobs, and have a big city on the spawn. Reason for this is because what if the large map was affecting the server? Otherwise a movement of the spawn would be nice.

We also were thinking not to allow /give or tp. But we'd miss having rune, melton, DF's areas, and some small bases of ours.
