The Coolest Number Ever

Posted by foslock on Dec. 2, 2006, 2:31 p.m.

I have discovered the coolest number ever.

We were in Algebra 2 and we were reviewing complex fractions and exponents.

0 to the 0th power, has no mathematical meaning.

Let me explain: Any number (besdies 0) to the 0th power is one.

x^n * x^0 = x^n (x^n+0)

This shows that since the product is equal to one of the factors, the other factor is 1. So this shows that every number to the 0th power is 1.

BUT! This is the cool part. 0^0 should be 0, but it also should be 1. It can not be infinity or negative infinity… so it has NO mathematical meaning. If you don't believe me, ask your teacher and make sure they are teaching high school, you'd be surprised how many middle school/elementary teachers have no idea what they're talking about.

I was really bored one day and made this cool little photoshopped image:

Again, this is definitively the coolest number.

No, see the problem with that is that just like in programming, some rules take priority over others. Something to the 0th power is 1 multiplied by that number 0 times, which would make 1 not multiplied by anything, so it always ends at 1. It is believed that the number is the number of times that it is multiplied by itself +1, so that 0 would be dividing upon yourself… but that is incorrect (and what leads you and your teacher to believe that 0^0 is 1 at the same time as being 0, when it is actually 1.

0^0 = 1

actually, the coolest number is i, since it is:

sqrt(-1)

It is for the same reason that 0/0 is 0, not 1… There are three rules around this

1) you can't divide by 0 without getting infinite

2) 0 divided by anything is 0

3) Anything divided by itself is 1

Rule number 2 takes precedence and the answer becomes 0.

I vote for Pi to be the coolest number.

Actually, if you want to argue the validity of the number, talk to your teacher. I have no backing to argue this except what I was taught by a 50 year old professor.

I just thought it was a cool number.
