The Coolest Number Ever

Posted by foslock on Dec. 2, 2006, 2:31 p.m.

I have discovered the coolest number ever.

We were in Algebra 2 and we were reviewing complex fractions and exponents.

0 to the 0th power, has no mathematical meaning.

Let me explain: Any number (besdies 0) to the 0th power is one.

x^n * x^0 = x^n (x^n+0)

This shows that since the product is equal to one of the factors, the other factor is 1. So this shows that every number to the 0th power is 1.

BUT! This is the cool part. 0^0 should be 0, but it also should be 1. It can not be infinity or negative infinity… so it has NO mathematical meaning. If you don't believe me, ask your teacher and make sure they are teaching high school, you'd be surprised how many middle school/elementary teachers have no idea what they're talking about.

I was really bored one day and made this cool little photoshopped image:

Again, this is definitively the coolest number.

Did you even read the article? The laws of mathmatics say 0/0 is undifined. If you're going to chalange that, you might as well re-write everything we know about math as we know it.

0^0 is not as clear cut. You can say it's 1, others argue it's and indeterminate.

Have you even taken Calculus?

Here's my 0/0 argument:

Say you have the fraction 6/2. You can change that to (3*2)/2, since (3*2)=6. You can now cancel the 2s to get 3. Therfore 6/2=3

Now say you have the fraction 0/0. You can change that to (4*0)/0, since (4*0)=0. You can now cancel the 0s to get 4. Therfore 0/0=4.

Wait a minute, that's not right. Becuase 0/0 is undifined, not 0.

WOW. I just relized how nerdy this all is.

The problem is that you can't cancel 0's, because they you are dividing by 0.
