The Squares: This is Halloween

Posted by mazimadu on Oct. 11, 2010, 12:13 p.m.

Alright, thanks to Rez' Halloween competition I have finally mustered the strength to make a new game. If you haven't guessed by the title of this blog, the game is going to be a Squares game based partially on the Nightmare before Christmas. Naturally the game would be starring our hero, Kyle Skellington(complete with pimped out suit).

Our hero ladies and gentlemen. He's dead.

For the better part of this weekend, I have been using my time wisely by animating the main character and some of the squares(who will be assist items) using flash. I must say, flash has sure made sprite animation very convenient for me. All I have to do is scale the characters down to the desired size(but not to low, so as not to loose the details) and I have them the way I want them.

Kyle's standing and running animation(more to come)

Rex as the devil. This is all he does.

KK werewolf, Loved making this one.

Corpse Lana.(She is wearing a Victorian dress, no complaining)

Unfortunately given the rate this project is going (no thanks to classes and test no less), I may not be able to finish it before the Halloween deadline. However expect this game (:3) "before Christmas" (nudge, nudge, wink, wink).

Also, that werewolf is awesome :D

I like how Kyle's face bounces as he runs. And he has no legs, only floating feet. And his pinstripes flash.

Other than that, pretty good animations, the werewolf in particular.

@Kilin

I thought you would have noticed that the squares don't have legs. Thanks for pointing out the pinstripe, will fix.

Well they have thighs, but they're merely an extension of the torso, I guess.

I haven't seen you actually try to animate one of them until now, so don't think I'm questioning your designs.

Nicely done, I'm not sure I'll make the deadline either, been a lot of work on the engine, but still a ton of graphics to do.

Lovely, I'm so glad to see someone making progress. :)

I really like the animations. I didn't think your animations of them would be so smooth but you proved my doubts wrong. My only qualm would be the lack of impact for Lana's punch.

@rez:

Thanks, BTW how's that competition going?

@thernz:

True. I had some difficulty with Lana since this was the 1st time I ever animated a punch. Pretty good for a 1st time though.

Good job on these animations.

I've never watched Monty Python before, and after that video clip, I never will.
