Hey guys. I just wanted to throw this out there, and see who's interested in, or has time for a music composition competition. Of course, this one would (hopefully) be a lot more organized than the last one, and I'll actually have time to sit down and judge this one, because I don't need to do Wintermester, seeing as I passed all my classes.

pounce4evur: google defines it as:
nov·el·ty /ˈnävəltē/NounThe quality of being new, original, or unusual.A new or unfamiliar thing or experience.in this context, novelty would just be the embracing and grasping of what is coming ahead of us, rather than focusing on the path behind us and what we do not yet have. it's really a concept open for interpretation, but to me, novelty means happiness, experimentation, and awe with the worldNovelty interests me, as it seems to be perfect for the style of music I create.
If space was too broad a topic, we really need to define what a novel piece sounds like. As far as I can tell, each piece is new, original, and sometimes unusual.
HALPLet's just say all pieces should be happy and be in a major key signature?
Idk just trying to helppounce4evur: that's the thing though, you can't define what a novel piece sounds like. that's the beauty and majesty of novelty, it's something that you haven't processed or understand quite the same way before you heard it. novelty is inspiring, novelty is something new, and whether new means making runs down a phrygian scale when you're only used to playing in C major, or an extended D# minor vamping session with extended use of 7th chords and other exotic tonalities, or disregarding all common rules of rhythm and tonality, then that's what it is. novelty is exactly what you define it as; it's a very subjective concept, but then again, so is a competition where musical output will be judged by some central authority. novelty is, simply put, everything you've never heard before. it's the sort of concept where every song that may come up can't be treated as equal to another song. makes it hard to judge, but, there's always concrete criteria for that, e.g. how much it moved you, what emotions it evoked, the technicality of it, and what methods were used to make each and every criteria noticeable
Ah! I see! So, something out of the norm for each composer. I actually really like that idea. And, it has the most votes right now.
So, this could serve as an experiment for each composer, and will have direct feedback for each piece.swag
Stevenup7002: its that subjectivity and ambiguity that spawns creativity! there will be a wide range of submissions, no doubt, but that isn't a bad thing. it's just the world trending towards novelty as it is. whether or not novelty is the theme, novelty is still an inherent part of every outwardly expressive experience imo.
Maybe in and I don't care about the theme.
I somewhat agree with Steven on this one as well. Music is an art, games isn't necessarily an art. You can't really rank art because it's so entirely different. You can obviously rank by how it sounds and stuff, but there aren't any concrete elements to evaluate when ranking. When playing a game, you evaluate controls, gameplagy, storyline etc. However, every art is different and does different things to you. It's much harder to rank art.
