Snubbed by GMG?

Posted by FredFredrickson on July 9, 2006, 11:47 a.m.

I am not one to complain much about certain things, but this has been bugging me lately, so I figured I'd write a blog about it. I've been a member of GMG (Gmae Maker Games) for about a year now, and since then I've posted demos of my games, final versions, and participated in the off topic part of the community a bit. It's not the forum I visit the most, but I do find it fun to drop in now and then. When I finished Hover Tank 3D in January 06, I posted it at the GMC and at the GMG. I also just recently posted Linked on their forum.

The part about all this that bugs me is that when I submitted HT3D to their games archive, I figured it would take a couple of weeks or so, and then it would be reviewed by one of the staff, or even featured in the monthly spotlight, if they felt it was good enough. So I've waited, and waited, seen many of the newer games get reviewed… And now, half a year later, HT3D has yet to be reviewed, and Linked, posted within hours of the GMC topic, got it's first post about 5 minutes ago.

I say to GMG: What gives? I know my games aren't perfect, but the differences between responses from one forum to the other is absurd.

I think you have to request a review at the GMG.

Eh, tough crowd. It took my game several months to be reviewed as well. It got the spotlight the next month though so I wont complain. I cant imagine a classic like HT3D wont get a review. Trouble with GMG is that so many members go to hang out, rather than talk about GM games.

GMG is full of noobs!

GMG Staff Reviewer here.

The most likely reason is poor publicity at GMG. GMG doesn't show latest additions on its front page, so the fastest way to gain attention to do it like GMC - make a topic for it in the forum. If you've made a topic, try bumping it. If not, that is where your problem lies.

There is no hidden reason to it. In fact, I personally thought that you had something against GMG, wondering why it's not even reccomended to the staff by other members. My guess is that very few people at GMG even heard about it (if so, only through GMC and 64D). Being the newest on the staff, I never even realized that your game even exists in the archive until you pointed it out.

Of course, even if you are desperate or irritated, breaking a topic rule is not a good move. I suggest that you edit your post on Hover Tank 3D in the GWR List topic, before someone gets mad. Just because you are very confident that your game is head-over-shoulders over others does not mean that you have any more rights to further publicize it where you shouldn't.

Let me check if your topic exists… Oh, there it is. Try bumping it and see what happens.

Now, on a more personal note, didn't you receive enough praise already? :) Anyway, I don't think I can officially review your game though. I'm very busy at the moment, and I have about 3 games "to-be-reviewed". Besides, I already gave my comments. You have to hope that you catch the attention of another reviewer. After a month, I should be able to get to your game though. Even so, maybe you are being a little bit selfish. Everyone wants a review and there are loads of people with decent games that deserve the attention that you've already gained at other forums. I don't mind reviewing your game nor do I have anything against you, but being pushy isn't looked favorably upon by anyone.

Thanks for the info Joewoof, but, come on… asking to get the game reviewed after 6 months is pushy? Selfish? I don't think waiting half a year before rocking the boat is rude at all.

I'm not quite sure how my game not being reviewed reflects an anti-GMG vibe from me though…? I have nothing against the site, it's staff, or anyone else there.

Don't get me wrong either, I think there are lots of great games that have been reviewed, and many more in the queue. If you think my game has received it's share of praise, and therefore does not deserve to be reviewed, then I won't bother with it again. It just seems ridiculous to me that games that have been out for about a month or so have been reviewed already, while mine is virtually ignored.

I put a lot of work into my games, and I like for them to receive recognition. What's wrong with that?

Ehm, not every game is reviewed. All reviewers are reviewing in their spare time, so be thankfull they even do it!

And Supremez: GMG is full of noobs? HAH! Check GMC please.

HM: I'll help you a hand.

That's exactly what I think all the time. Oddly enough, though, the games I know for SURE will get loads of recognition get barely any for no reason at all. It's rather calming to know that EVERYONE experiences these problems, so it's just not me (even people with a status developed throughout forums as highly as you have).

The GMG and GMS are EXTREMELY under-active. It takes days on end for games to be replied to. I think I personally got "lucky" to have two (I think) people to recommend my game for review in a row, to the point that Joewoof got encouraged to try it and give an extensive review about it. By lucky I certainly don't mean that my game was sub-par and two random people miraculously found it enjoyable to recommend it, but I mean that two people found the game to be enjoyable and did recommend it because they thought it was very fun, professional and well-polished (as I intended it to be). However, there are several games that are fun, professional and well-polished that never get reviews, I'm not sure because they already have a lot of attention everywhere else (which is I think the main reason why HT3D hans't been reviewed), or because they've simply been overlooked or any other odd reason.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure you're just wanting to hear what the GMG side of the GM world has to say about your game, not necessarily that you're still hungry for praise (which I don't think is possible after 6 months of an active topic in the GMC with 250+ replies not considering those replies when it was in the WIP stage and other forums too) and are rather puzzled/annoyed by the fact that the GMG didn't make a review drooling all over the game and founding a new religion for it.

I really don't know much about this and I'm still very puzzled by the way the audiences think. Some games they drool over and give them loads of attention in one place and are completely ignored in others. Some places love the game and gampeplay and others can't stand it. Simon Donkers has always said that there's always an audience for your game. Perhaps the GMC is the audience sometimes, perhaps the GMS, the GMG or 64D. In some places, the game will get an immense amount of attention and in others the game will be largely ignored and people will just not be interested in. I guess the GMG is in a way the "dark corner" for your game, whilst it was the "golden corner" for my latest game. People and places are just…different. Like I always say: "You can please some people all the time. You can please all people some of the time, but you can't please all the people all the time".

…Ok, that was a largely plagiarized quote from Abe Lincoln slightly modified, but it freaking works doesn't it? :D
