So I've been working on my last creation, Savage Defense 3. I'm looking to get version 4 done and was going over ideas on how to further intensify gameplay and strategy. Normally a Tower Defense style game has the basic "set up a defense and survive the waves" type of gameplay. I was wondering what you guys think about this idea. Imagine the computer also setting up a defense and at the same time you can buy armies of creatures to send their way as well. This will give the player more options. You either defend well, attack fiercely, or balance it out. What do you think?
btw, screenshot of v4 so far: - New button system- More environment detail
I wouldn't call it a tower defense game anymore, but rather 'just' an RTS.
It would have tower defense characteristics though. Enemies still follow a defined path to the other players' territory. You set up turrets in a contained area. You upgrade the turrets to enhance damage. You gain money to build things by destroying the creatures sent your way. It's just a more complex tower defense idea.
As long as it places more emphasis on defense, I'm cool with it. Otherwise it'll be "build one tower and rush a shitload of enemies to the computer"
Yes, of course. Balancing out the money flow will be essential, and I'll make sure the computer keeps players on their toes. I wouldn't want a "perfect gameplay strategy." I could always have the computer monitor what the player is doing and have it counter your strategy. For example, if you're sending a bunch of enemies and don't have a defense, the computer could set up a basic defense to resist your attack while sending creatures to your vulnerable base, or make the decision to do an all out defense and make a wall. Smart AI could be implemented, but sometimes that gets annoying for the player.
Reminds me of a really fun game on the PS3 called Comet Crash
I actually like the idea. Many "indie" games do the exact reverse (give player RTS-like control, but the enemies appear in waves, because no one bothers coding the actual AI). Having a tower defense game where the computer gets some RTS-like strategy is interesting.
@Ferret that's a pretty cool game. It basically has the idea I'm going for.
Those terrain textures look familiar. How are you doing the texture splatting?
On that note, you might want to make the textures a little less detailed. It doesn't match the turrets.
PLEASE DON'T MAKE THIS A GAME WHO NEEDS ULTRASUPAH-REQUERIMENTS!!!!!!!
Just Kidding.. Nice screen, I'm waiting this "update".
