Coming out sometime in 2012, apparently.
Supposedly a complete rewrite and will sport a ton of new features. No information on what these new features actually are, so guess we'll just have to stay tuned. What I'm excited about though is that Game Maker 9 will be available for both PC and Mac. No longer will Mac GM users be stuck one step behind the PC version. :)http://yoyogames.com/news
Theres no guarantee GM8 will work well on new versions of windows, which I think Windows 8 is gonna come out around when GM9 does.
if windows 8 changes a lot of things, its going to be a major pain in the ass.
We already know they are changing things a lot, the question is if old stuff will work with the new stuff.
Well, at least YoYo Games is finally doing something themselves instead of slightly improving someone else's work.
Microsoft would be insane to drop the decades of compatible software, given that that's what's cementing them at the top.
From What I've seen of it, the regular windows interface and structure run beside the flashy tile UI. I assume they kept most of the compatibility stuff from windows 7 as well.
They've moved the desktop environment into userspace, making it "just another application" in the same sense GNOME or KDE are "just another application". That doesn't make it less important, it makes the whole OS more flexible. I highly doubt there won't be a very easy method to autostart the desktop on boot - or rather, autostart any particular applications.
Furthermore, this may make it much easier to have true virtual desktops under Windows, which would be pretty useful, current methods aren't without their flaws.I think the major problem most people have is that they're equating the huge visual difference with a huge architectural difference - and while that's true to a point, it certainly doesn't mean your applications are going to suddenly stop working, it's still mostly the same OS, using the same APIs.I'm mostly just remembering when vista came out and broke every single GM game =p

Yeahh I think I'll stick with my old versions of GM for now…Yeah exactly. I'm sure microsoft has learned from their mistakes. But if they improve on certain things it might take time to update everything…
