Reviving the old RPG project that I started in January. The above is what I have so far. Over the next few days I'll be adding the beginning of the storyline.

The first demo will consist of about 30 minutes of gameplay and will introduce the plot and give users a chance to learn the controls and feel for the battle system.

A few things that you'll be expecting in the battle system is:

-Real time enemy spawn. No random stuff. You'll see the enemies walking around and will have a chance to chase them or run away.

-Turn base battles. Final Fantasy style.

-Leveling up system

Not much for you to see at the moment, just thought I'd introduce the project and let the few people who were in my RPG conversation the other day know that it is in fact being worked on.

I'd also like to let anyone whose making an RPG know that I'm all for tips and ideas. Need someone to test yours? Give me a shout. I'd appreciate feedback as well. Honestly, I doubt any of our RPG's are going commercial and they'll turn out a whole lot better if we discussed them with each other. RPG's aren't the best games built with Game Maker at the moment. I'd like to make a decent one, for myself and for the genres reputation.

The first two Paper Mario games had a very simple, yet effective way of handling battles. It's very similar to what Kilin described above, actually.

Same with Super Mario RPG. Jump on the enemy, get the first strike. If they attack you from behind, they get the first strike.

Yeah, Chrono Trigger was the worse when it came to random encounters, you'd be walking along and then all of a sudden 4 Green Imps jumped you. Technically not random but the player didn't know it was coming either, so it really kinda sucked.

Paper Mario rocks. :3

Anyone remember Quest 64?

I used to watch my cousin play that game all the time.

I just looked it up.

I'm so going to buy it.

- Some monsters are faster than others, and likewise, some are slower - Monsters might call their nearby buddies to fight with them (in Earthbound, any nearby pigs, for example, would attack you if you initiated one) - You can attack from behind, getting the preemptive strike in combat
I was thinking about some of these ideas. The whole calling nearby enemies is something I really wanted to get into so I could have multiple enemies in the battles.

@Glen

You know snorlax doesn't appear in a random battle right? It's actually on the overworld.

…I don't like RPGs :/

I need to play more RPGs myself, but I'd highly recommend trying Earthbound or finding an English patch for Mother 3. Like Mush said, the series is very underrated. It is very unique as an RPG, and while its graphics and sounds are simple, it's got a good story and it's very original.

If you can't get into a modern setting for an RPG though, you might be at a bit of a loss. But the guy who created it (Shigesato Itoi) is well known for his writing skill. Also, Earthbound is one of the more controversial games (see the final battle's graphic).

Sadly though, I haven't played Final Fantasy games at all, but another RPG I like is the Lufia series. The second one in particular mixes random battles with slightly more strategic encounters.

Also, DSG, if you ever want to figure out how to write a decent story, one of the better genres to look at in game design is the RPG. You're locking yourself out of a very large genre. Some of the mechanics might be hard to get used to, but if you can find anything that's not so generic, you might like it.

If I said I don't like Depths because it's a platformer, you'd probably say something similar.
